USB Flash Drive fixed to unfixed

    This one has me stumped.

I want to make recovery media on my windows 7 laptop.
It says I can use a USB flash drive or Optical Media. Obviously the Flash Drive is preferable to 4 DVD discs, but whatever USB Flash Drive I plug in it always becomes a fixed drive, part of the windows system. In order to be able to use the Flash Drive for Recovery Media purposes it has to be unfixed, not fixed.

How do I change it from a fixed drive in windows to a not fixed drive, if you know what I mean.

    TIA

Flash media is pretty volatile. Dont use it for any kind of backup like that.

Ok, how about using a USB Hard Drive?
    Same problem needs addressing though.
