Crime on Campus

    Hi Everyone,

I read in the leader this week about a man being sentenced for exposing himself on the UL campus. I was wondering, do people think that UL has a crime problem? I spoke to the FOI office recently about whether they keep stats on these kinds of things, but they don't. I would imagine this is because prospective students (and their parents) don't want to read these things.

The reason I've been doing a bit of research on this is for a piece for TST, so any "crowd sourced" info would be appreciated on this. I think we can't do anything about these things if we don't know they're happening.

In the ~15-17 years that I've been associated with UL and the clubs&socs, I've found that crime *on campus* is quite low overall.

The main crimes that I've heard of over the years have been thefts of cars/from cars/bikes/unattended laptops, and my impression is that given the volume of people the rates of these crimes are actually quite low.

Very few serious crimes overall, and the predator that was targeting female joggers or students by the riverbank walk over a decade ago was one of the few that I remember that became news on campus.

In Castletroy as a whole, the crime levels appear to be lower than equivalent areas around the country as far as I can see. It's gotten a little worse over the past few years, and I'm unsure what the underlying cause of that is, but it's still not an issue as long as sensible precautions are taken.

If you want stats, have a chat with the community gardai, they'll know who to chat with to get the information you are looking for.

And at that most are crimes of opportunity which can be easily stopped

The amount of unattended laptops in the library is a joke. Do students care at all

Take a few laptops that are unattended and hand it into library reception. Scare the crap out of some students which will hopefully make UL a safer place for all!

Or if they're open, quickly open up a word document and write:

"If I were a mean person, I would currently have this lovely laptop sitting in my bag on the bus home."

Then open 600 tabs of porn in chrome. :pac:

As for crime, theft seems to be the major one. Bikes and things from parked cars being the main one.

Heard rumours of worse stuff happening two years ago, but not sure how true it was so probably best not to post it.

Looks like you'd be stealing it though. Do security still waddle around upstairs in the Library? Could let them know and they could take it down instead.
