Would it be worthwhile to put a Sata III solid state drive into a machine (i7, 6GB, 2 x 2tb striped) that has a Sata II motherboard?

    The board is a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 .

well considering the general improvements made with each new batch of SSD's yes... i have a laptop with a SATA 2 port with a SATA 3 SSD... it still makes a massive improvment to speed.. i'd say get the latest gen of SSD as odds are if you upgrade the system you'll use it again

Samsung 830 seems to be good price/reliability/performance

    Strongly agree. :)

830 is a very good choice.
