600€ if you buy your own parts off the net. 2000€ if you buy some packaged garbage in a brick and mortor.
Just head over to the pc building sub forum under tech

Oh god, 30 in jan also! Pc gaming since I was 12 or so, breakthrough games for me were doom and bioforge, never looked back! 😊

It's like Lego. Pretty easy to assemble. there are a few things to be wary of but nothing major.

If you want to get an iMac you're going to need to boot camp windows. OSX is limited to Source engine games and a few others.

Also the new iMacs aren't out yet and you can't buy them til next month at least. The old models are unavailable.

Anyone know of someone selling a PC? I'm really trying to keep costs down as family kids etc putting me on the Backfoot cost wise

People always say its easy but to be honest I found it pretty nerve wracking, when you unpackage all the parts to a pc you're faced with a mammoth amount of wires, I think my first build took 6+ hours but back then the Internet was ****ty on advice and YouTube vids make it a lot easier now. It is very rewarding when you do finally sort it. Stick with pc, forget iMac.

Click the link Seantheman posted, wiz kids on that upgrading sub forum who will be glad to help

    Try adverts.ie or donedeal.ie
Might get a decent enough pc for 500 or less if money is tight

If you aren't too confident about assembling it yourself and you decide to take the advice of the guys on the PC building forum to order from Hardwareversand, they will assemble it for €20.

I've dealt with HWVS a few times before and they've been great with shipping times, customer service and the like

Would this PC setup be powerful enough for gaming??

I'm asking as was considering using flexor rent over 3 years or even 2 and upgrading at that stage again??

That looks like bad value. It only comes with intel graphic so would be terrible for new games.

Hardwareversand.de will put your pc together before shipping for €20
I know it would be nice to buy it in a shop but it's not really an option when you will save hundreds by getting it online.
About €600 for the pc and €200 if you need a monitor + mouse and keyboard.
Don't get a keyboard from Hardwareversand though as they only sell german ones.

Head over to http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=842 and start a thread with what you want the pc for and budget, they wont set you wrong.

I was hoping to buy in harveynormans for flexirent!! Just as cash is at a low etc!!! Have any of you seen good value in any way shape or form in harveynormans?

Wouldn't mind buying PC there and doing some mods to help with costs out of my own pocket.

Plus flexi is great as endless accidental cover etc...

It's a pile of sh|te that you won't be able to upgrade.

    Fill this out;

If you want to ask about a new build, please include as much of the following information as possible in your thread:

    1. What is your budget?
    [€xxx]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing/3D Modelling/HTPC/Internet] (If gaming include which games)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
    [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]

If you have a sample build yourself, use Fluffy's script to format it nicely.

    and post it here; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=842

If you don't want to put it together, you can get hardwareversand to put it together for you, or ask one of the lads to pop around and put it together for you. Extra bonus is that you'll be able to build a basic PC now, and throw on some extra RAM and a better graphics card at a later date when you have more funds. Most of the pre-built crap that you get in the high street shops won't have the slots to allow you to do this.

I see, I didn't know what flexirent was.
Store bought pc and even dell or hp normally have very little room for expansion if any at all.

Have very little room or enough to justify having the PC for 2 years till I can save up enough cash to do Job right??

In relation to this, how do you go about an OS when you build your own PC?

Its expensive if you go legit?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

I had a look on harvey norman and none of their pcs are suitable for games. They have weak cpus and no room to fit a good graphics card.

Most their desktops seem to actually use a laptop cpu with a small motherboard.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit is about €80

You can actually get a gaming pc for 380 euro off hardware versand with the following specs, provided you dont need a copy of windows. Should run games at full settings

For some reason I was under the impression it was more expensive

Considering avoiding the next round of consoles and going PC myself, few people in college swear buy it. Next Gen now apparently :p

As a slight aside I recently switched to Win7. Having assembled the pc I settled in for a good few hours installing then the endless cycle of rebooting for driver installs.

Win7 was installed in circa 20 mins plus 10 for any needed drivers. I was gobsmacked.

    @Dark:

Head over to pcspecialist.co.uk I got my new pc there. Good experience with them.

    Alternative is scan.co.uk.

Both will give you the following system for roughly €600.
    Core i3
    1gb dedicated graphics,
    8gb ram
    500gb harddrive

Its not awesome, but it's capable of solid gaming.

Would this PC setup be powerful enough for gaming??
I did quite well a few months ago, Agos were selling off their older iCore models. I got a Toshiba P750 for E620, down from E800. Loving it.

I would say you need to decide on your requirements. This of course depends on your favourite/planned games. (I knew I wanted SC2/X-COM/Mechwarrior Online/Diablo/Civ 5)

I settled on i5 for processor, 4-6GB RAM and minimum 1 GB discrete Graphics card. The graphics card allowed me to immediately dismiss many models. With the sale I was able to get an i5 that I thought might be out of reach.

So what are your reqs? What games will you be playing? By posting these on the laptops forum this will allow the guys over there to help you. If you are on a budget then stating that is important. (I was lurking on that forum for 12 months as I slowly set aside cash to get my new laptop, kids make that difficult)

I thought about the self build but I was restricted to getting laptop. If your are going for a desktop you should have a greater range and the option of the self build.

DO NOT make the mistake of buying a pc for gaming from harvey norman or pc world/currys etc.
    Screw this flexi-rent BS.
The end result from buying from the above and or flexi-rent etc will be you overpaying for total and utter garbage components.
No matter how tempted you are ,i promise you will regret it badly once you try to game on such rubbish hardware.
There have been countless people like yourself given great advice and guidance over on the forum linked above.

Having recently purchased from Hardwareversand.de after some real helpful info and tips from the PC Building & Upgrading guys, I'd highly recommend it if you can afford it.

All in all, it took me 2, 3 hours one evening from unpacking to booting up and that was with no PC building experience, as someone mentioned it really is like Lego, everything you get comes with instructions, couple that with good tutorials online you'll not go wrong.

Best gaming decision I've made IMO, going to pick up Guild Wars 2 soon and I'm currently playing FM13.

    ^^ totally agree
Never ever buy pc's from those shops unless its for business use so you can claim the vat back (only if your really lazy) for business customers dell is the best. for gamers get it built your self. If you buy those pc's now you ain't gonna run the high end games and left with no choice but to buy another pc with 2 years.
When you build your rig can go cheap on certain things. for instance you have to get a decent MB but you don't need to buy a high end graphics card or a lot a ram at the start. You can add/replace them at a later date. and in the future as you will have the essentials twr case etc the cost of upgrading is cheap.
