    Hi,
I am living in a big apartment building and I`m on 24MB NGB (My DSL modem is connecting around 17MB). Few days ago, a friend who lives in the same building as I am living - only different floor - got a broadband from eircom, basic 8MB package. Ive helped him installing it and checked connection... and I was surprised because his pings are lower by 10-12 ms. I have checked with google.com and eircom.net, and while I`m getting 25-26 ms he is getting 12-15 ms and we are both connecting from the same building.
Quick tracert shows that difference is showing on first hop after router
    Tracing route to eircom.net [86.43.38.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.254
    2 23 ms 23 ms 23 ms b-ras2.blp.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.155.10]
    3 25 ms 23 ms 24 ms ge-6-1-7.pe1.blp.blp-srl.eircom.net [86.43.246.45]
    4 40 ms 24 ms 23 ms tenge-6-1-1.core2.srl.core.eircom.net [86.43.253.137]
    5 27 ms 24 ms 26 ms tenge-3-2-1.core2.dbn.core.eircom.net [86.43.252.41]
    6 44 ms 25 ms 25 ms tenge-1-2-1.pe2.crz.crz-crz.eircom.net [86.43.252.138]
    7 24 ms 24 ms 24 ms ge1-5.service4.cra.dublin.eircom.net [159.134.125.46]
    8 24 ms 25 ms 24 ms isp1.eircom.net [86.43.38.8]

and here is my question, I know that my ping is fine and I cant complain about my broadband but still this 10 ms less would be a small difference - I`m playing online a lot, and my pings to servers in Europe were always between 70-100 depending on a place, so I was just wondering - what may be a reason for this?
Deffinitelly nothing in our apartaments - as difference apears behind router - and communication between router and computer is flawless in both cases - so may it be that he is connected to a different place on a exchange?
I know that probably nothing can be done, especially with fibre coming to balbriggan really soon - but still its just weird for me. I have tried to call broadband support just to ask, but someone sitting there tried really hard to tell me that my friend must have newer network card then mine...
Anyway, I am just curious, why this difference :)
    Thanks in advance

Despite being in the same building, you are most likely going out on a different pair. This pair may or may not terminate on the same switch in the exchange. The switch ports may be configured differently. Your default GW may be different, or the first hop out from there might be different.

There are numerous possible causes for what you are seeing.

    Hi Paxon,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I got your details thanks, I could not find an issue with the connection or telephone line that may explain your varying ping results?

Can you go through a checklist we set up on our forum - http://bit.ly/yvTmeT

And let me know if there is any change.

    Thanks, Mark
