I would take back all Catholic Church lands and property. They can pay to rent those particular assets, of which, will go towards reducing our deficit.

Make Mary "Butterface" Harney and Charlie McCreevey the real Government and head down early to Fagan's for a sneaky few dozen scoops of Bass.
Followed by a luvley Chinese takeaway - chicken balls and sweet and sour sauce. Mmmmmmm.

I would immediatley remove all references to God/Religion from the Constitution, laws, oaths, and practices of the state and its bodies.

I'd put it back in to annoy atheists

    Good Idea.

Anybody can make the odd mistake. Give them a few chances etc.

But after you third offence. Bang!

Shot between the eyes like a rat.

For illegal drugs, no chances whatsoever though.

I'd sterilise drug addicts, and sentence anyone who wears a tracksuit that's not for playing sports to a choice of either death or a lifetime of community service

I'd bring in progressive income tax laws so that the richest in our country would pay a fair share.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    I'd keep the seanad.

42 Members would be selected randomly from the electoral register and could not be members of any political party nationally

    18 members would be elected

They all ready do! I'm all for "the rich" paying their fair share but they are already nearly paying 50%!

You want to punish them for being successful just because you aren't?

Nope - It's not about punishment - it's about redistributive and contributive justice :)

Justice?! You are penalizing "the rich" for having the temerity to make money and being successful.

    Are you a socialist perhaps?

You say socialist like it's a bad thing.

No we are telling the rich that because there are so many more of us poor people we can dictate to them what we think is fair whether they like it or not.

Come the revolution we may even kill people just for being rich and uncaring.

This is what happens in unjust societies,we need to be careful.

If you were Taoiseach for a day:

I'd put on me overalls and buy a giant tub of paint to lighten up the inside of the very drab and somber looking Dail, I'd then have the seating replaced with some brighter coloured fabric. I would bring in legislation for a once a week "dress down/mufty day" for all TDs, so that Mick Wallace wouldn't feel alone for at least that one day! I would then pass a bill allowing Ming (and all TDs) to use/smoke ganja in the Dail coffee rooms, but only on a Monday (to lift the mood a little). And finally, I would get out my electrical tool kit and install a remote controlled mute system installed on all the TDs microphones, that way if I didn't like what I was hearing I could just push the mute button & cut them off mid sentence :))

    Busy day.

Any examples of the grinding and unrelenting poverty you face on a daily basis? What would you define as wealthy? How much extra would you take off the now defined wealthy? What would this achieve?

You could raise it to 99.9% and the effective rate would still be below 6%.

Punishing the wealthy ? Thats funny . . The alternative is to disproportionatley punish those less off . .

A person on 200k a year getting a 5% tax hike costs them 10k a year. A person on 30k a year getting the same hike costs them 1500 a year. The person on the lower income is paying 15% of the amount that the richer person is paying. Do you honestly think that they will both feel the pain financially in the same manner? Who is being "punished" more?

Coupled with that is the fact that this example highlights why those on the higher tax bracket pay more taxes %wise, quite simply because they make so much more money. It skewers this debate because it suggests that they are somehow feeling the squeeze when the truth is that they are feeling nothing remotely close to the pain that those of us on lower salaries are feeling. Incidentally I think the person on the lower income in this example is sacrificing way more then the rich person even if they arent contributing as much financially. . Why should we be "punished" more proportionatley because creative accounting PR trys to make out that our rich are somehow really suffering or pulling their weight?

I have no problem with people making money or having more money then others. I find it repulsive that anybody could think that cutting vulnerable peoples welfare is preferable to raising taxes to people whose lives would only be effected in terms of the luxury they enjoy (as opposed to how much financial pain it could cause) . .

Shows how inherintly greedy and ignorant human nature is, that people convince themselves that following a corrupt economic system (thats sole principle is about increasing ones wealth) is more important then deciding to find a strategy that proportionatley shares the pain. As a society, we have sacrificed the concept or moral/principle/community in favour of putting all our trust in modern capitalist economic principles (of course unles a large financial institution f**ks up and we all have to bail it out!) . . At the heart of its all a pile of rotten sh*t . .

Incidentally , if I was Taoiseach for a day I would make financial planning, budgeting and regular politics debates compulsary in schools/colleges. Peoples ignorance and total lack of interest in these things have played a huge factor in why we are in such a mess . .

Just one? mmm it´s tough but probably this:
anyone convicted of any of the following crimes - murder, attempted murder, gross bodily harm, rape, sexual assault - gets a minimum of 25 years in prison. No parole. No suspended sentences.
If they committ any 2 of those crimes or any one of those crimes twice, it´s life in prison. Again no parole and no suspended sentences
