Hey guys quick question is backpacker/travel insurance needed? i no in Alberta they have free health care if i am on the iec visa would i be able to sign up for it? so would i still need to waste 200+ on insurance if thats the case:D

Also serious cheap flights on skyscanner to calgary at the min 350 one way to calgary in march:D

Yeah you definitely still need backpacker/travel insurance. You need to be in the country and working to apply for the free health care. But the IEC requires further insurance in any case (annoying for people already in Canada paying for provincial health care!).

It is a nuisance, and they don't always ask for it at the border but I wouldn't chance it without.
Moving 2 Canada have a good list to try for cheapest http://www.moving2canada.com/planning/travel-insurance/
I would wait until just before booking flights to get this though!

Great price on flights, but I would hold off buying flights till I had letter of introduction. I know people last year who applied in Jan and for no reason didn't get anything till May.

I have recently applied and obtained my Garda clearance but when received I realise that he left out one of my residency addresses on the certificate when I lived in Ireland. Will I have to apply for a new one with all addresses shown on it or will it still be valid?

Raging as I'm living in Oz and its a fair bit of hassle going through the whole process again! :-(

Just spotted this for those of ye already living in Canada:
    http://www.moving2canada.com/newsmedia/new-federal-skilled-trades-program/

Have to have a proper read of it myself. Found the link via "Irish in Vancouver" page up on FB. (I've no association to it!) but it is a good page to keep an eye on IMO.

hi folks, i know the requirements for 2013 visa have not been announced yet but was just wondering what is typically required for the application documentation wise,

i have garda clearance, oz police clearance, upto date cv, copy of passport....anything else required, birth cert, passport photos or the likes??

    cheers in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 CianSmith85

Nope you pretty much have it covered there you will need photographs two signed by Garda and then just wait for forms

passport photos obviously? just signed or do they need to be stamped also? thanks

Are you sure about this? The passport photos didn't need to be signed by the guards last year. In fact nothing did. The police check was enough.

I had to give the Gardai 2 passport photos to get my clearance............?

Hope this isn't a stupid/out of place question-a few people who have posted here seem pretty clued in so thought it would be a good place to ask! I'm hoping to get my visa for Canada 2013 along with the rest of you; i'm from N.Ireland, have lived here all my life and hold an Irish passport. I'm abit confused regarding police checks-someone told me Irish participants from N.Ireland need Access NI clearance (the basic one), but someone else told me i'd have to apply for police checks through the UK's ACPO. Had never even heard of the latter til it was mentioned to me this week. Any info on this would be appreciated :)

    From the website:
For Irish applicants, a valid Police Certificate is the original document which is prepared by either the Garda or in the Police Service Northern Ireland. Applicants who do not sumbit the original documents will be refused.

So that to me would be the NI police. You are applying as an Irish citizen on your Irish passport so assuming you haven't lived in England/Scotland/Wales then the NI police cert is fine

Can anyone confirm if the CV needs to be a Canadian Resume or an Irish CV when applying? I have been told it can be an Irish CV, and I have been told it needs to be a Canadian Resume...

I'm applying with my Irish CV. I'm 99.9% sure it does not have to be a Canadian resume.

I'm getting the picture that you need to submit a cv?!? Glad mine is up to date, although perhaps a tweak or two wouldn't go amiss. Why do we need a cv may I ask?

Yeah, you need to submit one along with your application. Not sure why they need it, I guess they do a quick scan of your CV just to match the information with other forms you've filled in. Not sure tbh. :pac:

Guys, I participated in the program back in 2007 to 2008, so, I should be fine to apply now with the new changes in the rules? Part of me thinks it's fine, but part of me is not sure how to read it :l

Yup mate you can apply as long as you haven't participated in the IEC twice already. Applying this time you'll have a 2 year visa.

I emailed the IEC last year asking them this. They told me it would most likely be refused as I already had an unactivated visa. If I was your I would wait for 2014. You'll be granted another two years then and be good till 2016.

I'm in the same boat as you. We apply for the same program, exact same way. This time you'll have to put your sin number on the form

I have a LOI from the previous 2012 program that expires June 2013, I haven't entered Canada yet and so, have not received my Visa. Can I get a two year one now instead of one?

Just an FYI, current holders of LOIs still get the 12months they applied for :-/

"IRELAND: If an Irish citizen holds a Letter of Introduction dated for the 2012 participation year, then they should only receive a work permit valid for 12 months as per the agreement at that time. If it is their first participation, they can apply for the 2013 or onwards participations and, if approved, receive the 24-month work permit."

Hi there Im just wondering if anyone has any info on this or are in the same situation. Myself and my girlfriend have just arrived in van on a one year visa it was issued to us in 2012 but we have arrived the end of Jan 2013. Our visas state that we have to be leaving Jan 2014. Does anyone know does that mean we have to go through the whole process again to stay the extra year or is there a way of sending an email with our reference numbers etc to the iec and they just extend it..
Ive gone throught the IEC site and cant seem to find the information.

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭Lollipops23

It is shocking that they are all gone already. They are accepting some supplementary applications (goodness knows how many) to fill the places where people cocked up/dropped out, but other than that, that's it. Madness. People want out of this country.

More like people want an extended holiday to be fair. Most will trot home in the next year or two.

I agree somewhat with your point but for some people applying for the iec visa is the opportunity to find a job and make a better life for themselves.

True it is a stepping stone for some. But for the vast majority it's just an extended holiday. Plenty of work in the uk and Germany, yet we don't see the hype about going to live in those places. Canada is supposed to be a nice place I wish everyone luck but most will learn in their own time that moving abroad Is not a panacea. Hope maybe to go there myself in a few years but I know what's what.

Sure each to there own jank i see you are abroad why didn't you move to them places you mentioned?;) i myself am using this visa to hopefully stay long term had the chance to go to NZ to CC but the pay was just not worth it. and with canada it is:D

I think you are rather lumping everyone into the same boat, saying they are going for extended holidays, or don't understand how things will work over there. I know there are some like that. Think the streets are paved with gold and that it'l be hands down easy to find somewhere to live, a job and be on good money in no time. There are always dreamers like that. Then there are some people who are just going for the craic, to experience something different and will just come home after the two years and settle back into whatever. But there are a big chunk of people who are looking to better their lives, who want to settle over there if possible and make a better life. They understand it won't be easy to get set up and make that life, it'l be hard work and cost money. But they don't feel Ireland has anything to offer for them and they are fighting for nothing.

Yes, I agree but the stats indicate that it will be a small minority, usually under 10% if that. The press will latch onto,it though and use it to beat some politican saying that the floodgates have opened. The reality is very very different. It will take years to play out.

    Hey guys,

I'm currently living in Canada and didn't manage to get a spot on the IEC for this year. Anybody know if its possible to get an extension or anything that could extend my stay a bit longer? Any help would be really appreciated.

you cannot extend your current work permit. end of story.

seeing as you missed out this year i guess your only other option is for an employer to apply for an LMO on your behalf. It takes about 3 months to process if its the companies first time being granted one.

note tho that this option is highly unlikely in your case as one of the criteria which must be met is the companies inability to fill the position with a permanent resident of Canada. With factory work near Toronto I'm sure there is lots of Canadians to choose from.

Not necessarily. In Alberta Canadians don't want to work in factories and employment goes to foreign workers. In some cases factories will get open LMO's in the hope of filling the position. I'm sure the same can be said for Ontario.

Even some new provincial nominee programs have accomadated factory and food service industries.
