Are you all part of the slack jawed, zombie headed group of students I see trundling towards their predetermined fate in the RDS exam halls these days?

...........make sure you bring a six pack to your final exam.............it worked wonders to help me get over the disappointment of it :D

In other news, my BMW's intermittent fault is being, well, intermittent. Drove great the past few days and then like a bucking mare this evening. It's being dropped off to my mechanics FINALLY on Friday.

Not his fault mind, I've been working like a crazy person these past few weeks with exam classes and a dreaded whole school inspection.

Had my 'cigire' in today...........it went well

166man you need to clear your PM's

I do be part of the UCD crew heading down there over the next few weeks. Back in again on Friday then off for the weekend. Not going well so far anyway...

Can't say I noticed it myself but I have many similar things like that on mine that do my head in.

I remember the days of school inspections, táim sasta go raibh siad easca go leor...;)

    PM's cleared. :)

It's a 2000 e200 2.0 engine, automatic, cloth seats (shudder), but in great nick electronically and mechanically, no rust, no head gasket issues, nothing, and tbh our mechanic would never dream of mentioning it if it wasn't in good nick.

The C5 is booked in for a service, has an NCT till Jan, few scrapes on the bodywork, but is a serious workhorse, so tbh I'd put i up for €1000 (it's 2003) so I've bargaining power.

OH fell in love with the e200, so why not make him happy for small money?

I'm based off Leeson St, and just took up sailing, so some day I'm working from home and not travelling we could hook up so I can admire the family alfa collection?

Yep if you got a few hundred quid for the C5 I can't see you having to put much towards the Merc if you decide to go for it. A small price to pay for happiness is a rare thing in this country.

I'm based just around the corner from where the pictures of the blue GTV were taken, not sure if you know the are well though?

You must see the family all together, I'm in exams now until the 18th and hopefully collecting the car around then, most likely the 20th so there'll be four cars in the drive!

You're more than welcome to have a look at them though! The Spider might be of interest to you if considering a Brera. :)

My 2nd exam over today only 8 left too go :(
In car news my focus is going to the mechanics tomorrow evening and ill probably just leave it there for a few days and let him get the parts and sort out all these small but annoying problems it has.

Ah righty, if you're ever in the area, take a quick spin down towards the Cowper Luas and you might see a nice (shiny) Spider around there...;)

    LOL :D

Nope, this is what I have to do in order to get the wastegate thing solved. It's a remanufactured turbo and I have to send BMW back my own one as part exchange so it works out cheap compared to having to buy a brand new one which isn't possible as they have been discontinued.

Wait wait wait..... Why didn't you just buy the wastegate on it's own?

Edit: They can be replaced on their own

Why not buy bigger turbos? :(

Due to the fact that the wastegate is constantly hitting off the seal (this creates the ticking noise) the seal wears down and even with new wastegates, it won't seal properly at all.

Is there no upgraded actuator option? Like something from Roose or Jasma?

I know if it were me, I'd be looking to put on a different set of turbos, regardless of the cost.... I know there's remapping, custom fabrication etc but it'd be worth it if keeping the car for a while. Well, to me it would anyway :)

    What turbos are they anyway?

So I was gawking through dondella (yes, I call it that for the shneer) and saw this Escort

    Full-19759716.jpeg

    Tidy.... But suspicious

Now, doing some googling brings me to here

    ford-escort-chicane-16v-5dr-1-6-px-to-clear-hatchback-1997-black-85e4ea5c3d8d8affee070e2b89d05f9e-m2.jpg

Tut tut tut...... Nice try with the wheels

Is there a thread for putting up such vehicles?

There's no option for an upgraded actuator on its own. Even if there was, it would require different mapping in order for the turbo to meet boost levels properly. Even at that, it's only masking the problem whereas by doing what I'm doing, I'm solving it for good.

There's not a hope in blue hell I'd fork out for 2 new turbos. That'd be close to 3 grand along with possibly a new intercooler and whatever else is needed. I'm replacing an OEM turbo with an OEM one that has been remanufactured for BMW with all the upgraded parts plus a 2 year warranty from BMW.

I don't have the money, time or facilities for custom fabrication or anything like that.

Like, how sinister can you be when you're working with what to most people is - a ball of sh1te....

Am i missing the point?

Ah, I see.... Balls to that! :(

I meant as in who makes the turbo?

When you put it like that, seems like you've exhausted most of the possible solutions!

See this isn't a dgt scrapyard special turbo that's made from tree bark, rust and grass haha

The turbos are Mitsubishi and as far as I know, they're the same ones in the VW TFSI engines and a lot of them gave the exact same issue with the wastegates.

I've researched it from flashing the ECU to move the wastegate further from the seal, installing a spring setup to take up the slack (my mechanic did this, made it better but didn't solve it), to new actuator etc. but everything apart from replacing the whole unit was only masking the issue. Turbo lag was always going to be there otherwise.

The giveaway was the tax disc on the screen, it's an Irish one in the other pic.... My guess is it's pretty rough outside!

The 1.4 was never a nice engine, I had 2 Escorts with it. Not a happy sound from either of them.....
