Obviously Mike, personal preference comes in to it, but of the versions I have heard, the best partners Peter has had for Don't Give Up are

    1. Paula Cole
    2. Kate
    3. Jenny Abrahamson
    4. Sinead (dear God no!)

Oh I agree with you, I think Paula Coles interpretation of Kates input on "Dont Give Up", is possibility the quintissentail version of the song, although she almost has a folky approach to the song rather than Kates "pop" influence might I add.

Sinead O Connor and Willy Nelson do a decent version as well, on paper it sounds weird as hell, but it actually works, not bad

And as for Bono and Alicia Keys version................

Alaimacerc, I think people applaud the female solo part of Don't Give Up, is to acknowledge the bravery of anyone prepared to take on one of the most iconic pieces from that era. Kate laid down a high standard

That's a good point. A "props for trying, at least" ripple! :D The song itself does somewhat have the structure of being centred around the vocal "turns", with the band practically just vamping. I think that's what tends to facilitate the interjection of the applause.

I must admit to feeling something akin to that about cover versions of her own material. Kudos for good taste in source material! Well done for trying! And... don't call us. (Though I'm a big fan of a certain Geordie take on "Hounds of Love". *precautionary duck behind cover*)

    And rightly so.

I was just a bit surprised that folk could remain seated for Sledgehammer, in particular. I just expected everyone to be up for that and then sit back down once Don't Give Up followed.

Watching the DVD from London and there is a mixture of folk sitting and standing. But for Sledgehammer and In Your Eyes, everyone is up.

I remember being at Depeche Mode this time last year and the place was absolutely jumping by the end of the night. It was quite the spectacle.

@ Mike Guide 69, Re " Highlights for me were "Digging in The Dirt",(favourite tune of the night) "Growing Up", "Red Rain" and the usual "Sledgehammer" and "Dont Give Up"."

He didn't play "Growing up". Just saying.

It was a fantastic show as always by Peter Gabriel had seen the SO tour last year in Manchester because I never thought he would take it to Dublin ! Sound was fantastic I love the optimum standing so close to the stage but yet plenty of room ! Even though a lot of the crowd didn't many songs from the first 2 Menus he really did his best to keep them entertained ! Highlight for me was Family Snapshot he played it in Marlay park in 2007 as well ! Darkness was a nice surprise ! I ordered the live cd of the show back in October and got a copy of another show as well for Euro 19.99 I am looking forward to January already to relive Wednesday night ! I am hoping some of the new songs he has debuted on tour may find their way on to an new album which is long overdue !

Yep, that optimum standing set-up is just perfect.

I still cannot believe just how good our seats were.

I seem to have escaped Tony's photographic depredations! I think possibly only narrowly, though. Especially the one where he's snapped from "backstage" down the security barrier channel, I must have been just slightly further to the left, behind the barrier (which I could somewhat see over, into where people were lurking in the staging area).

However! He did not entirely escape mine! Albeit I seemed to have even more problems than usual in getting a dang thing in focus and vaguely properly exposed -- I think the aforementioned cross-stage lighting might have added to the usual difficulties.

It was phenomenal. I was on the barrier, which was a great vantage point. Right from the outset, I had a feeling it would be an outstanding show and I was right. I'd not seen the Back To Front show before and I deliberately made a point of not watching the DVD prior to seeing the concert for myself. Best decision ever.
A full-on production with a super-tight band and a shrewd setlist. So many highlights, but the "loud" section of Secret World was incredible. The Tower That Ate People was terrific. Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill were such good fun too. Who cares that they're almost the default Gabriel songs for fairweather fans; that doesn't make them any less enjoyable.
It doesn't quite beat Kate Bush for my gig of the year, but it's the only one that comes remotely close.

Bastard! I'd have loved to see Kate! :). Call for DelbertGrady to be banned for being alucky fecker! :)

The gig was epic. I'd only seen him in Marlay Park in 07 and just wanted to see a full P show more than anything! I was just awestruck for the 2+ hours. No other way to say it! He's an absolute showman who gets it right so much of the time. I was amazed how well his voice sounds. I was just the row behind the barrier so was in a great spot. No pushing, moshing or idiots trying to scrunch up the front. It was all very civilised which added to the pleasure of the gig. His voice is in great nick for a 64 year old! I loved Beako, Sledgehammer The Tower That Ate People and of course Don't Give Up. Jenny did a great turn on the Kate piece. I really liked her voice. I think it just feels natural to applaud anyone taking on that part. It's an iconic piece and a big ask to take on something Kate originated. Everyone who does the duet tries thie4r very best and the results are always incredible. What's not to applaud!

The highlight for me was Mercy Street. It was so atmospheric and his theatrics really underscored the song. I just found myself transfixed and carried away.

I'll be travelling to see him again no question. I'm hoping he'll be back in the Point but I wouldn't take that chance and, even if he does, I'll just go see him there too!

Can you imagine what it would have sounded like if Peter's original choice, Dolly Parton, had sung it with him?

Hmm, actually, I can imagine that working quite well but we couldn't be deprived of Kate. The video would have been weird too! Worst duet I've heard was his performance with Tracy Chapman at one of the Nelson Mandela Wembley concerts - she was nervous as hell and her voice just doesn't fit the song.

Hugely enjoyed the concert last Wednesday. Third time seeing him after Marley Park in 07 and the spectacular Secret World staging in the old Point in 93(?) with the young Sinead O'Connor absolutely nailing the duets. It's a shame he seems to end up only bringing every other tour to Ireland.

Sadly, it's not even every other tour. We didn't get any of the Growing Up tours (on either leg), or any of the orchestral tours. He did say at Marlay Park that they had hoped to bring the Growing Up tour to the Point, but that the dates hadn't suited. However, I also suspect that the Point was too small to accommodate the production.

If I remember correctly, there was a long run of Riverdance and some other theatre show on at the Point when the Growing Up tours were in the neighbourhood.
