I've helped setup a datacentre for a multi-national company in Shannon, to say that IT Infrastructure in the mid-west isn't good enough for a company is just plain wrong, yes you may have problems at home but you won't if you are a large business, hell, if you wanted to use domestic infrastructure you could just use UPC :)

In my opinion the I.T. infrastructure here isn't up to scratch at all. Many companies require MANs (Metropolitan Area Networks) as a prerequisite before they decide to locate here and these are not widely available. There is none in Shannon for instance, but yet there is one in Kilrush.

We are light years behind mainland Europe when it comes to I.T. infrastructure. I worked in Germany in 2006 and we had 100mb connectivity at headoffice but in our subsidiary plant here the best we could get was a 2MB leased line. We had to use a radio link for redundancy that cost €40,000 to implement as there was no other option available. I know things have improved since then but change isnt happening quickly enough.

It is rumoured that one of the reasons Paypal located in Dundalk was because they have a MAN whereas the location under consideration in Limerick didn't.

Our I.T. infrastructure isn't up to scratch in any way, shape, or form.

Limerick does have a MAN.,.Here's the maps from Enet
    http://www.e-net.ie/uploads/File/man_pdfs/Limerick.pdf
    http://www.e-net.ie/uploads/File/man_pdfs/Limerick%20BP.pdf

The countries MAN's are managed by Enet from LEDP.
That reason for Paypal is a bit of a red herring imo..and never saw it anywhere as official quote.

I know Limerick has one but as far as I know not all locations/industrial parks have access to it. :)

Seriously doubt that Dundalk has a better infrastructure from eircom than Limerick.

the second map above shows what industrial parks are covered. Paypal was mentioned for the old DELL building in Raheen (EMF3)...there is no shortage of bandwidth in Raheen afaik

shannon and limerick are too different species, the quality of broadband was one of the reasons that was given when limerick lost out to dundalk, i am just quoting the national news at the time, me i have a little over 2mg most of the time, the rest of the time it is under the 2, that is according to the sam says router, its plenty for me, as my needs are meger.

I heard last week that a company that currently sponsors an English Premier League team is about to make an announcement about Limerick.

Surely you heard the name of the company otherwise that would be a vague thing to hear.

Not knowing anything about soccer I wouldn't know the sponsors either.

I don't no a whole lot about soccer myself but it seems to be mainly online betting and shopping are the main sponsors now.

The 20 PL sponsors are Emirates, Genting Casinos, Samsung, Chang Beer, FxPro, Standard Chartered, Etihad Airways, Aon, Virgin Money, Aviva, AirAsia, Waitrose, aap3, Bet365, Invest In Africa, 32Red, Autonomy, Zoopla, SBOBET and 12BET.

Out of those the only possibilities I could see would be the online casinos or the financial companies opening call centers.

Any chance its cook medical expanding as they are producing a new fda approved stent

This is a possibility, they are supposedly looking in to 24 hour shifts. I think the manufacturing is only 7am to 5pm at the moment with maybe 3 shifts. The FDA approval is worth millions to them and they will be ramping up production now that they have it.

They've heavily invested in retrofitting their original building and have moved a lot of admin staff to a new building in order to increase production and R&D space.

Hopefully the 400 jobs relate to some other company and that Cook can also bring in extra jobs.

    Good News For Tipperary Town

Former Pall Corporation property sold for around €1m

    http://www.independent.ie/business/c...m-3301248.html

The largest industrial property to sell in the Irish regions this year has been bought for around €1m.

Located in Tipperary Town, the manufacturing facility extends to over 15,965sqm (171,850 sq ft) on a site of 10.4 acres.

It had been a production centre for health care company Pall Corporation from 1997 until it closed last year.

Joint agents BNP Paribas Real Estate and Moynihan Curran negotiated the sale to an established Irish company which is expected to locate operations in the premises.

However, the agents declined to disclose either the price or the name of the buyer.

The agents had been asking €2m for it originally but are believed to have sold it at less than that figure.

Peter Flanagan of BNP Paribas Real Estate commented that the sale was aided by the fact that the property had a good range of existing services including a significant power supply and the building and site had been well maintained.

Kieran Moynihan of Moynihan Curran said the sale was very good news and a vote of confidence for Tipperary Town.

"It would also hopefully lead to new employment being created at this excellent facility in the short to medium term," he added.

    Hardly this is it?

I know we constantly try to extend out boundary but that is a bit far to claim that for LImerick jobs.

Rumor alert but could it be the call centre for the new irish water company??

I heard something similar today also. Lad told me it had something to do with even making water meters too and will be based in Raheen.

Would it not be a bit late starting a company for the production of meters. Retrofit of premises, validation of processes and training of personnell, would see this as 3 months min.

Isn't the meters implementation starting 2013??

would the government not want to validate these meters, this could add another few months, the rabbit will have bolted by then.

Another question, if a company is going to be manufacturing meters, would they invest so much in a start up for only an 1.5 - 2 mill households. Not cheaper to expand current site and ship to distribution centers.

Me personnally would hope for a new medical company or manufacturing company to set up shop. This along with the possible expansion of Cook and Vistakon along with the finance jobs which were announced a couple of months will be a great boost for Limerick. With these then M&S would be inticed to set-up in Limerick.
As previous poster has stated M&S setting up now wouldn't have the same benifit as a new medical / manufacturing company.

If you're willing to take a chance that it MIGHT be for the new water company which MAY/MAY NOT be basing itself in Limerick, then here's where to send your CV: recruitwater@bge.ie

Got that via the link provided by gihj which led me to the Bord Gais Networks site. Just call me Sherlock :D (either that, or I've got too much time on my hands!)

This weekends Limerick Leader headline "400-Job Call Centre Lined Up"

Has to be the water company, Leader article says it will be a call centre for an indigenous enterprise and not a multinational

Would be surprised if it goes in the old Dell building. It isn't really laid out for offices, there are surely more suitable office buildings around than having to convert a huge manufacturing plant into offices.

Great news but I would love to see the 400 jobs in the city centre rather than the suburbs again.

I suppose there's no (available) office space in Limerick to accommodate 400 people.
