Great news but I would love to see the 400 jobs in the city centre rather than the suburbs again.

I suppose there's no (available) office space in Limerick to accommodate 400 people.

Riverpoint must surely be fairly empty and if I am right in NAMA as it was part of fordmounts developments

Nope, most of the floors are occupied so its a non runner. I think maybe 2 floors out of 12 are unoccupied.

I can't think of anywhere suitable in the city centre for 400 office workers, unfortunately.

City centre would be a non starter for this size employer, you have to think about the logistics of having such a high number of employees and the local services. Private car parking, ease of access to the road network for deliveries and/or visitors. This is why similar size or big companies set up in suburban industrial estates where they are designed that way. City centre is more geared towards retailers and small to medium sized businesses.

Surely its cheaper to buy water meters from an established company rather than build a company to manufacture them and then disband manufacturing once the majority are made and/or installed.

Anyway, why would you need 400 people to man and operate a call centre and/or manufacturing. My house, and many others new builds, already have water meters installed since 2006. Also social housing are not getting them anyway.

Can't imagine it would be the Water Board or whatever they're calling themselves.

Would be surprised if it goes in the old Dell building. It isn't really laid out for offices, there are surely more suitable office buildings around than having to convert a huge manufacturing plant into offices.
dont agree with you there, they could easly convert upstairs in emf3, the dell plant is ideal for those jobs, Canteen area, parking, no matter were they go they will have to start from scratch so why not there,

Ok 400 jobs are great but why are we hiring 400 new semi state civil servants right at the time that we are trying to get rid of thousands of them.

    They won't move them.

Maybe Ive got this wrong but they wouldnt be hired by the state directly.. Isnt there a tender out for the services so a third party company would sell the service to the state.

With real benchmarking, i'd be willing to assume

Dont fexco run the bord gais contract as an outsource job. Would they not logically take on the new job too as irish water is going to be run by bord gais. Is it not 400 outsource jobs which tend to be minimum wage? Regardless, it is good news for Limerick and will give a few hundred families a lift in the new year.

Yep it would be good news for some families towards the middle to end of next year. With luck Limerick will see lots of other similar stories crop up on a regular basis.

What I read in the paper is that the water board hope to hire 75 - 100 by the end of next year and up to the 400 total mentioned by the end of 2016.

What you mean you want there to actually be jobs too?! Surely an announcement that there were jobs in the possibility was enough to satisfy people.

You cant just announce jobs and actually provide them. There is a whole official PR cycle to go through.

    First you leak it.
Then the local government TDs get to nudge nudge wink wink their supporters.
Then the local government TDs get to announce it to the voters in the local papers (this is the stage we are at).
Then things go quiet for a while.
Then opposition TDs start to question if it was real and issue statements complaining about lost jobs.
Then you leak it again and adjust the number of jobs so headlines make it seem like it is another set of jobs.
Then the local government TDs claim in local media that they have individually met and fought with the company to secure the jobs when they were in danger due to some irresponsible complaining by the opposition TDs.
Then the Minister visits the town with the CEO of the company and a large group of government TDs Senators and Cllrs to officially announce the jobs.
Then things go quite again as the planning process happens.
Then in a few months the government TDs get to announce that they have individually met with the planning authorities and secured the jobs.
Then the government get to announce the creation of hundreds of jobs at the start of construction. Once again change the number slightly so the casual listener thinks they are new jobs.
Then the minister and the ceo and a small army of TDs Senators and Cllrs get to turn the sod for the hundreds of new jobs.
Then things go quiet as construction goes on.
Then the government TDs get to announce that they have finally got agreement from the company for a date for the jobs to start.
Then the government TDs get to nudge nudge wink wink put in a good word for you in a job application.
Then the Taoiseach Tainaiste and half the cabinet get to come down and announce the creation of hundreds of jobs and tour the state of the art facility.
    THEN people start work.

it seems (going by a thread on p.ie) that dennis o brien of mobile fone fame bought, got whatever a company of limited reserves rather cheaply, then hey presto a subsirery company gets the contract to be the national water company, without it having to tender etc, amazing is it not, it seems at the time it caused quite a furloure over in p.ie.

You mean the story about 3,000 potential new jobs at Shannon airport is not enough for you?

Bloody cheek of you wanting job announcements to be followed up every time with actual jobs.

But yeah it would be nice if the announcement that was headlined with "Huge Jobs Boost For Limerick City" now came with another announcement of the jobs actually coming online or at the very least a confirmed starting date for them.

Nah there won't be any announcement this week (other than things like dropbox which is a corporate decision outside their control). Any good announcements will be swamped by the bad news from the budget. They will be happy to try and take some credit for private sector good news like Dropbox but it is better PR to hold any good news completely in their control for another week and just write off this week. They will keep the heads down and take their beating this week and then come out with some good news stories once the news cycle has calmed down.

Not a hope! There is a reason why the unions are furious this morning and are calling for the staff to be left within the DAA. Shannon will be all but closed within 3 years.

I was playing on the use of the word potential rather than actually believing there was 3,000 jobs going to appear in Shannon airport.

So one month later, did we ever find out what these illusive 400 jobs were?

    Nope.

But it made for a great headline though.

    Huge jobs boost for Limerick.

Because many people remember the headlines but not whether there was any substance to the headline.

it seems that dennis o brien bought a company, with a month that particular company had the contract to install the water meters, there were no tenders sent out, that company got it at their price.
