Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    VEC Hiring Policy
I am a first time poster and have just been for some interviews for VEC positions. On doing some research after the fact (maybe should have done this before) I came across this in a memo on the Teachers' Union website with regard to VEC employment. Is this true? Do all VECs consider this when forming panels? Any advice or light on the matter would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    3. AGE LIMITS

Normally, on first appointment, a permanent whole-time teacher under a Vocational Education Committee must be not less than 21 years of age and not more than 30 years of age provided, however, that a person over 30 years of age and under 40 years of age may be appointed if the Minister is satisfied that he is a suitable person for the appointment, having regard to his teaching or other experience. The Minister may, however, sanction the appointment of a person who is not less than 20 years of age, and is fully qualified in accordance with paragraph 9 of this memorandum. A qualified person who is over 40 years of age may, in special circumstances also be sanction for first appointment.

    Is that from Memo v7?
They may not have updated it, but current job situation and the profile of people before they get their first 'full' job means it's outdated. It was written for the times when people got full-time jobs.
There are people of all ages on the panels.

Thanks for clearing that up. I figured it couldn't be right, given the current situation. I can't believe it ever actually came into play. Seems extremely unfair.

That policy is ridiculously ageist! I would question the legal standing of this.

The idea behind it was (I think) that people would be in a position to claim a decent enough pension at the end of their teaching career. It was pre-AVCs and all the rest.
