Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Spain offers foreigners homes deal
    An anti-eviction protest in Spain.
    19/11/2012 - 13:52:33
Spain is to offer foreigners residency permits if they buy houses worth more than €160,000 as part of an attempt to reduce the country’s huge number of unsold homes.

Trade Ministry secretary Jaime Garcia-Legaz said the plan, expected to be approved in the coming weeks, would be aimed principally at Chinese and Russians as the domestic demand was stagnant and showed no sign of improving.

Spain has more than 700,000 unsold houses following the collapse of its property market in 2008.

The country’s economy is struggling and is currently in recession with 25% unemployment.

Thousands of houses have been repossessed by banks and their owners evicted because they cannot pay their mortgages.

The government last week approved a decree under which evictions would be suspended for two years in specific cases of extreme need.

The country’s offer beats others in bailed-out countries such as Ireland and Portugal, where residency papers are offered to foreigners buying houses worth more €400,000 and €500,000, respectively.

It was not clear if the residency would only refer to Spain, and not the European Union.

The stricken state of the country’s real estate market was highlighted by figures from the Bank of Spain which showed that the level of bad debt in the country’s banks had risen to a record 10.7% of their loan total in September.

The 16 other countries that use the euro have agreed to lend Spain up to €100bn to help support the country’s banks weighed down by these bad loans and investments.

On top of the bank loan, Spain has been under pressure to apply for more outside financial aid to help it manage its debt and deficit.

The European Central Bank has insisted on the move before it will make good on its pledge to buy the bonds of certain troubled countries to help lower their borrowing costs.

Spain says it is waiting to know all the conditions that might come attached to the rescue package before making a decision.

So will this allow 1000's of Russian and Chinese to be legally able to reside ANYWHERE in the EU

Residency permits would most likely apply to Spain only.

I work with a few non-EU citizens who have Irish residency/work permits,so they can live and work here, but they don't get any of the EU-wide freedom of movement/residency EU citizens would have.

No it will only allow them to reside and I assume work in Spain. Such persons would remain visa requiring nationals for all other countries, I would assume within Shengen they can move but have no rights to work or reside.

I think the article is incorrect in saying ireland has a scheme where the purchase of a house grants residency.

No doubt there are 1000s of Russian and Chinese folks who would be ready to spend €160k+ in Spain just to get on the dole here to sponge this state off...

Well they wouldnt exactly be scrounging off the state if they have that kind of cash handy. And London's property market sure isnt complaining with all these oligarchs and 'little emperors' buying up posh pads.

....but there's only so many swans to go round. Soon mobs of Russians and Chinese will assemble, warring to death over who gets access to that most sacred of delicacies. The country will be left a smouldering ruin, with free prams blocking the devastated streets, while free houses burn to the ground.....

Yeah, as a tourist. Living there for any period more than 2 weeks leads you to suicide.

I find Chinese people to be very hardworking and generally keep to themselves. The problem is all the Romas going around in the big skirts robbing all before them and the Nigerians. It is unfair to label all "foreigners" the same as a lot of them are just like Irish emigrants, looking for work.

And it's a bit unfair to lump the Nigerians in with the Roma

Who in their right mind would want to move to a country with a current unemployment rate of 25% and a reputation of corruption and bogus planning laws that has seen so many foreigners losing their properties. :

Spain plans to offer foreigners residency permits if they buy houses worth more than 160,000 euros, in a desperate attempt to reduce the nation's glut of unsold property.

The plan, aimed principally at the Chinese and Russian markets, was announced yesterday by the secretary of state for trade, who insisted it was necessary to reduce Spain's housing stock in a stagnant market.

I assume by giving residency by buy a house equals you don't have to live there?

If that is the case, there are probably 1000's of people who would buy residency documents for a European country.

According to that article, you can buy Irish residency for a €500k property investment. I didn't know that...

So they want to start another property bubble???

This country could offer citizenship to anyone who does the same ...it would cripple locals...driving up prices whilst wages stayed the same

    And you have empty houses....

So you buy residency for 130,000??? What about usual criminal checks etc???

    Eu papers are sought after...

To be honest the Govt there has lost it ....it will backfire

Again they sell they own people out to help developers

It is crazy to start another bubble

Ireland has similar policies in place. In fact, most countries (all of the ones I've looked into) have special exemptions for rich people.

It's just a question of how much money you have to have.

Naturally, once you are a legal resident, it's almost always just a matter of time before you can be a citizen.

If you've got 75k to invest, you can come to Ireland, start your business and remain a legal resident then apply for citizenship. For 500k you can just 'invest' and don't have to deal with the hassle of starting a business. You and your family can just come on over.

It's also unfair to tar all Roma and Nigerians with the same brush. I mean, I could read any number of similar lazy and stupid comments here from people about immigrants/foreigners etc and come to the conclusion that Irish people are really thick as planks.

Which would be stupid of me; wouldn't it?
