Skype's ACTUAL call charges

So so I don't have a landline in my flat so to save money on calling landlines from my mobile I put some credit into Skype as they advertise local calls for 1.9c per minute.

Great says I, cheap calls, even though I understand there's VAT and "connection fees"

So I'm just off the phone to a landline. Was on less than a minute and my Skype credit went down about 11 cent.

Hardly a fortune I know but 100 of % above the advertised rate.

    What's the deal here?

I use a SIP provider rather than Skype ..... quite a number give free calls to lots of locations for a set period after you top up with €10 + VAT or more.

The €10 can be used to make calls to mobiles or locations that are not covered by the 'free' offer.

This is ONE example .... there are many ....

Check out the call set up charges/minimum call charges.

Not well known but some providers will charge a call set up charge - an initial charge irrespective of the length of the call.

I believe Blueface for example charge a call set up of approx 2.5 cent per call.

Rate is 2.2c per minute, rounded up to the next minute: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/payg-rates#cc=IE
    Connection fee is 5.6c: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/payg-rates/connection-fees/#cc=IE

So 7.8c. Are you certain it wasn't 61 seconds long? Because that would make it 10c.

Bizarre. isn't it that they can advertise 1.9 cents per minute and charge 10 cents for two minutes?
Eircom digital have got to be cheaper than that.

Nothing bizarre about it ...... the set up charge is a once off per call fixed charge and the rate per minute is 1.9c thereafter.

If you make lots of short calls then you would be better off with a provider that does not charge a call 'set up' but has slightly higher (maybe) per minute rates.
