    Hi,

I am just looking for some advice. I am a medical student training in Ireland and I am planning on doing my internship here then doing my residency in the States.

I am interested in doing paeds or anaesthetics and I was just wondering what people generally do when they finish their residency as there is a difference of a number of years in an american residency versus an irish bst and hst. Would you require a few more years experience in America before applying for a consultancy post in Ireland/UK?

    Thanks in advance!

my experience is limited to doing a fellowship in the us, not a residency. Anesthetics in Ireland is relatively streamlined....I think 6 years to completion after intern year. Paeds prob is a bit longer.....?10 to completion. Residencies in the us are shorter, average about 5years to finish after graduation.

I don't know about the English job market, but if you never did a training scheme in Ireland, Ithink you would struggle to get a consultancy. Simply because you would be against others who had, and therefore would be known....if working in Ireland is your endgame, I would suggest training here

Practical answer given by other poster

Legal answer is you have to have done equivalent time ie here you cant legally be appointed a consultant until a minimum of 7 years after graduation during which time they expect you to have been in education positions which in US would be residency and Fellowship

If you do 3 year residency and come back here you will only be offered a job as registrar and not consultant, happened to guy from my class who stayed here for a few years then went back to US

Another hrulde may be internship as to be on general regisater here or trainee specialist register you have to have formally completed an intern year which is accredited

Worth writing to Medical Council now and asking them will they accredit an intern year in USA
Tell them thinking of going there to train and want to come back to work in Ireland and how will that affect ability to get on specialist register
