Right, time for the full report.

I arrived out at the studio at Elstree for 12.15 as instructed. There was a queue of people going around the block. When I got inside the door there was basically chaos as SRO the crowd responsible for sourcing the audiences had sent out way too many tickets and many people were being told to go home. There are 2 types of tickets, ordinary ones and priority ones which are guaranteed admission. I had a priority one so was safe but many had not. The studio holds around 90 people and they send out 90 priority tickets. I felt sorry for those who travelled and were not let in. It was the only part of the operation which I am critical of.

We were let to the studio at 12.50 for a 1.00 start. The studio is laid out with 2 rows of 20 seats at the front and there is 30 seats at the back like a cinema. Between each section is where the cameras and floor managers are. I has sitting in the middle of the 3rd row from the front. They had Andrew Bird the comedian on hand for the warm up and to keep things going during breaks in filming. He is a very funny man. Alexander and Richard came out and said hello and to thank us for coming. Alexander promised to be finished in good time, and then quipped "you do remember those Chilean miners?" LOL!!!!

Then the contestants were brought out and recording started. When they play the theme music in the studio Richard and Xander are tapping it out on their desks.

Now here is the spoiler of them all
Richard's computer is a dud. He works entirely from paper and prompts via the ear piece.

All I can say is that show 598 must have been a good one because one contestant was asked
Who is the archbishop of Canterbury? His answer was Dai Dai or something along those lines. The whole place was in fits of laughter for about 5 minutes.

As you can imagine they make a few mistakes here and there which requires doing over again. Also the board with the answers is not always correct and often needed to be fixed during the recording. This is a time consuming process as it has to be manually edited.

Whenever there is a difficult question or picture round, the contestants are allowed time to think (Xander said it was to be fair to podium 1) and are allowed to go up to the board to take a closer look.

The tower is run on windows xp. I kid you not.

There are set changes needed for the head to head and the final. These take a good few minutes which we got some good banter from Xander and Richard. They were also signing any pointless books that were brought along by the audience. Also Xander would sign 50 shades of grey on page 54, which is his favourite page.

When the contestants give their answers for the final recording is stopped for a good ten minutes or so. Firstly so they can type the answers into the board but also I think it is for the adjudicator to check them.

The first show took 2.5 hours to record and the second just over the 2 hour mark. It was well worth the trip and I shall do it again this time I shall bring a sack of books for signing.

I shall take questions from the floor now.

Did they tell you that they were looking for researchers?

Richard: "St John's Ambulance on standby - Spain is the world's fourth-largest producer of lettuce."

And Xander falls - but St John's Ambulance aren't required.

    :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

The likes of Vernon Kay could take quite a few lessons in humour from Mr Armstrong and Mr Osman. ;)

    I have a question, Fred...

Were there any returning contestants on both shows you saw recorded and if so..... do they go off to change clothes between episodes?
