Great news today in the midst of all the doom and gloom of the budget. Funding has been allocated by Minister Phil Hogan (yes, the same Minister who lives in Kilkenny) for the construction of the Fire Station in Waterford. This will now pave the way for the extension of the Court House which was already allocated funding sometime ago.

The Dept. Of Environment had put this on the back burner for sometime now due to economic restrictions, but work has been ongoing over the last few months to secure this additional capital project for Waterford by local Cllrs & Paudie Coffey.
Pleased that the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan has allocated €2 million for a building of a new Fire Station in Waterford City to replace the current Station in Catherine St in the City.

This will now allow for the redevelopment Waterford City Court House and it will allow the Court House to reach its full potential and will be a large economic boost for the City.

Its post-budget as the question over finances for the project needed to be 100% confirmed before allocation. But there has been confidence for a while now that such funding would be allocated and negotiations were going positively with the Department, the Minister and local reps.

"Minister Hogan paves the way for upgrade of Waterford Courthouse as he allocates 2 million euro to Waterford" or "Hogan gives green light to Waterford as 2 million allocation allows new firestation AND upgrade of courthouse"

I can just the headlines now on next week's local papers!!! (or will it be buried in the middle of the paper)

Great news to be sure, but let's not get overexcited at €2 million funding lads. Remember Phil Hogan is well paid in his job as Minister, and the fifth-largest city in the state has had a sub-standard fire station for many years now.

We pay plenty in taxes, so this is our entitlement - it's not some sort of gift from above! To put it in context, pick any company out in the industrial estate - the likes of Teva or Sun Life and you can be sure they and their employees pay over a hell of a lot more to the exchequer each year than €2 million!

I'll hold off on buying the bunting and streamers until we see a university...

The total investment is 7 million euro I think, that 2 million comes from the Emergency Services Capital Funding programme.
