Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Are they the most irritating TV adverts ever? I don't even want to think about what they cost us (if they were so bothered about using the fee properly, which by the standard of TV, they aren't).

What can they do to you if you don't pay it? And who said you had to pay it? Is it an actual law?

    I think it's stupid.

How have you managed to be so fortunate to never see one of their ads?

Of course its the law, they can fine you, and if you don't pay they WILL send you to jail. Economy wreckers can sleep soundly at night, you will try to sleep knowing Damo is going to be in the showers in the morning.

Or less traumatically, this might happen
I was very very broke at the time. A local garda, who I had met previously after my home was burgled, came to my house, sat down and said “you have to pay the fine or else you’re going to jail” followed immediately with “it’ll be grand, you’ll be home in time for your dinner”. He told me exactly what would happen:

I would be taken by him from Kilkenny to Dublin in a taxi. Yes, a taxi. He would have to bring me because he would technically be escorting a prisoner. He would go with me into Mountjoy, where I would be processed as an incoming prisoner. This could take as little as 20 minutes, as much as a couple of hours. I would be officially logged as a prisoner, my fine would be expunged, and then I would be immediately released due to lack of space. The garda would return to Kilkenny by taxi, and would return on my own steam - by train. If I had no money, Mountjoy might give me the fare. The garda told me “we’ll leave early if it suits you. You’ll be back for your dinner”.

I asked him how sure he was that it would go like this. He said “100 per cent. We do this run almost daily. It never varies. I can guarantee you you’ll make the afternoon train”.

    “Stupid system”

Yer man says it's easier to pay by direct debit... I disagree.. I've been using my rabbit for years to pay my TV licence. One year I gave my guinea-pig the opportunity to prove himself reliable, but he came back with a rod licence. Guinea-pigs just can't be trusted with important tasks... so from now on, Roger is going to be my main man when it comes to licence renewal

It's a good point OP, I wonder how much these ads cost to make. Won't it be easier and cheaper just to have a scrolling txt run across the screen, reminding people to pay, or just a a simple black screen with white txt saying pay the fee. I could do that for say €10,000.

The government just got €850 million for the spectrum freed up by turning off the analog signal. Why don't they use this and advertising revenue to fund their mouthpiece.

Never paid tv licence in my life. A licence required to watch 2 national broadcaster channels, ridiculous. What do they think income tax is for?
