What time is this supposed to happen? European time, American time, Asian time, Australian time? Or is it 00:01 regardless of location? At least that way we gets a heads up :pac:

it's not only about the Mayan calender you've also Nostradamus then you've got this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibiru_cataclysm
most people are saying the whole doomsday thing is bull but there is a small percentage that do believe something will happen, as for us. we're invited to a wedding that night and if the **** hits the fan we'll be right at home with the kids. sorry cuzz no wedding for us ;). i think for something like this there should be some sort of poll. if people do believe in it they certainly wont voice their opinions on here.

If Niburu was about to smash into Earth tomorrow, it would be well visible in the sky by now.

    Also:
sorry cuzz no wedding for us ;)

    You're marrying your cousin?

You can only see Niburu if you squint, turn three times and chant a Mayan battle hymn.

Not exactly December 21st (in fact its three days following that date), but a man named, Pane Andov, predicts that within three days time the sun will enter its red giant phase.

There's something very interesting going on in Washington. For the last four years Obama's family would have already been in Hawaii and he'd join them a few days later for their vacation. This year's trip should have begun on 17/12 but it appears to have been put on hold. The President is definitely staying in Washington until after the 21st.

The cover story is that it is the fiscal cliff negotiations keeping the President and all of Congress in Washington when in reality it is the Continuity of Operations Plan.

I wonder what all of those people who came up with their Armageddon / Boogey Man stories will have to say when they wake up on the 22nd to find that the 21st was just another day where only anything that had ever happened before happened, but will still try to point at something and say "...see see told you so!"
Its all going to be like when the year 2000 was supposed to bring cumputer and electronic systems crashing down and planes were going to fall out of the sky, and look what happened back then... NOTHING!!

Hopefully there'll not be anything, the thing I'd really fear from tomorrow is lunatics using the "event" as an excuse to start shooting places up.
The time isn't for another 9 hours anyway so I'm sure anyone who was planning something would save it for then, but hopefully there'll be nothing.

There was a looper on FM104 about 11:45, he reckoned that earth was going to just fall (yes, fall!) out of the solar system and kill everyone and everything. Even ended up saying he wanted it to happen so he would be right! Unless he was trolling, he has to be hiding under his bed sheets hoping something, anything happens so he can show his face again :pac:

What is David Dee trying to say here exactly?
That the shadowy overlords he imagines were tricking gullible idiots into believing all of the 2012 nonsense?
Or that they are going to convince the sheeple that nothing happened on 2012?

right so, we're all still here, yaaaaaaaay

    22/12/2012 now by my clock

I think i'll politely inquire if some of the moderators could lock this thread before it descends into the usual farce of people mocking the OP and anyone else perceived to have 'fallen for' whatever hysteria this is chalked up to

In fairness, the OP is a former mod here and can take care of themselves. I'll leave it open in case anyone has some insightful comments, or to talk about various peoples reactions. Although, people, please keep in mind that if you just want to take the piss you're better off going elsewhere. I'll lock this if it's just getting out of hand.

    thanks

well i guess there's/only one major question lef the regards 21/12/12

was it the cusp of the precession or whatever the technical term is, i've generally always thought of it as the song from hair, the dawning of the age of aquarius - but there is an astronomical term for it

    The answer is no.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Aquarius
In 1929 the International Astronomical Union defined the edges of the 88 official constellations. The edge established between Pisces and Aquarius technically locates the beginning of the Aquarian Age around 2600 AD.

There is no connection at all to the Age of Aquarius and any date in 2012 made by the Maya or by any ancient astrologers. It's an entirely modern invention

The more important point is that astrology is abject nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

yeah but that's 88 constellations worked out by a group with a bit of a condescending attitude towards the whole concept.

where does it fall within the 12 traditional boundaries. I don't know about the mayans but over here on our side of the pond 12 seems to have been the traditional number

88 constellations of which 12 are the zodiac.
And they are rightly condescending as astrology has no merit.

There are none, that's why none of the people who believe in the idea can actually tell us when it is.
And then the constellations are completely as arbitrary as much as the borders between them are.
And then there's the fact the Maya did not use the same constellations, if at all.

And then, there's in fact 13 signs of the zodiac (as in constellations where the sun passes through.)

The question you asked has been answered, and is a bit pointless.

It's kinda strange that the people who think this is completely ridiculous would have twice as many posts on the subject as supposed believers.

What I found most surprising about the 21/12/12 prophecy was the coverage it was given. I remember reading about the prophecy in a Horrible Histories book about 15 years ago and though it would pass un-noticed to everyone.

But for the past 3/4 years, I've seen reputable channels such as Discovery, Nat Geo, along with some mainstream stations, not only providing documentaries about the prophecy, but feeding the idea that it would actually happen. This was usually someone claiming events such as Pole Shifts and a Yellowstone eruption was imminent, without providing any counter arguments or evidence. Basically, it seemed they were going out of their way to spread fear.

Why these stations decided on creating programming dedicated on spreading fear is the question for me.

The age of Aquarius is not really an astronomical event. When the equinox moves over to the next constellation in the zodiac, it's a non-event. The only people who think it's important and give it any significance are astrologers.

Using astronomy, it's not going to occur for about 600 years. The only people who say other wise are astrologers and other pseudo-scientists.

    Ok. It doesn't.
The Age of Aquarius is not really an astronomical event, nor does it correlate with anything in the Mayan calendar or any concept in their culture.
The date of 21/12/2012 had no astrological significance to the Maya and was only important or interesting in the same way the year 2000 was to us.
(Though I should mention that in their mythology the previous incarnation of the world lasted for the same length of time between now and the start of the current world, which is in fact the fourth. They however did not believe that the gods were going to destroy this world like the previous ones as it was perfected by having humans on it.)

The connection between all of these things is a modern invention to sell books.
