Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just thought it might be a good idea to make a thread for introductions. Get to know who's who. People's backgrounds maybe.

    I'll start,

I'm currently doing final year of EEE (Electrical & Electronic Eng) in UCC.

Will probably end up in the microelectronics industry or embedded systems.

Always interested in doing projects at home, rarely actually *do* the projects :pac:

Let's make this an interesting forum!

    Please continue...

I'm doing my first year of the Computer and Electronic Engineering Masters in UCD.

I try to do projects at home, usually end up getting started then get distracted with the next idea. Hence why my bench is this messy :D

I've great intentions of putting everything on my blog at chet.ie but never seem to get a chance to update it. I did manage to get a feature on Hack a Day which was my proudest moment :p

I'm a bit older than the two of ye - I finished my Physics undergrad 10 years ago, including a couple of electronics modules, and moved on to a CompSci HDip (more boolean algebra & circuit design work). I'm a sysadmin by trade, but I've been getting the itch over the last year or so to get into more hardware hackery; I tried my hand at the MIT 6002x course but didn't really have the time to do it properly. I do have an Arduino and a stack of Pis ready for whenever I get time to work on my projects.

My first sizeable project will probably be trying to develop the bones of a home alarm system, more out of curiosity than necessity - I'd like to design a system that can interface with components like light & pressure sensors but also do things like trigger a webcam, start an automatic stream process, make an alert call/send an SMS notification, stuff like that.

I'm 32 btw. I went to college part time in 2007 doing the UCD access course. Then full time doing the 4 year electronic engineering degree but switched after third year to take a BSc in engineering and to start a two year Masters.

Over christmas i'll be working on hacking our central heating controller to a) be controlled over the internet, and b) be controlled via a google calendar. My wife suggested i add an external temp sensor and turn the heating on when it reaches X degrees too.

It may be of interest as once i have the bones of a network attached controller its easy to extend it to other things.

Well apparently I'm in your class OP. I have my suspicions...

Started E&EE in 2007, hoping to graduate this time round and work in design/eval microelectronics or rf. I'm more practical than academic!

Finished my undergrad in electronic and computer engineering in Blanch IT in 2010, went on and did a taught masters in EE and renewable energy systems in NUI Maynooth.

Currently working as an embedded engineer for a security products company here in Dublin.

Looks like we've got some collection of Electronic/Electrical Engineers from UCC. :p

I graduated from that course just last October, taking more of an interest in the RF/Analogue side of things in my final year. Currently working in a start-up company in Cork that specialises in the design of active antenna systems. It's really interesting and varied work, prefect for a graduate like myself.

I always have plenty of ideas for little projects to work on, but haven't gotten beyond drawing up schematics for the past year or so. Really need to get my hands on more equipment before I attempt something else. Hopefully this year I'll get at least one project started and finished.

Hi all, mature student returning to education in September, going to do Electronic and Computer Engineering in UL just saying hi. Always liked the idea of
home projects, glad to see something like this on Boards.
