new telly - need advice re: refresh rates etc...

    Hi guys,

My telly broke recently. It was a 5 year old philips hd ready one. 32''.

I mainly use it for xbox 360.

So now I get to upgrade, the biggest I'll go for will be 40'' but would rather 37'' due to the size of the living room.

I went to Currys last night and theres just such a huge variety of tellys I'm slightly confused.

I'm not too bothered about the whole smart tv thing. If its on it grand but its not a big deal to me.

I hear its better to have a higher refresh rate for gaming ie most tellys I saw were 50htz. I assume my old one was only 50htz

Then theres the LED vs LCD, LED seems to be better and dearer.

Anyway the one I'm looking at that I think ticks as many boxes as possible is a 37'' Samsung LED, 100htz one for €649 reduced from €679. Full HD, smart telly etc. Below:

    http://www.currys.ie/Product/SAMSUNG-UE37ES5500-Full-HD-37andquot-LED-TV/312969/339.0

Is there any others at that price point or cheaper. Really can not go any dearer than that. Its over budget as is.

    37'' to 40'' max.

    Any ideas or thoughts welcome.

    Thanks,

    Eoin

ps.. Just saw this one on the site as well seems to be down from €679 as well to €589 so cheaper and bigger?? I dont get it.

You would be better off on the HE Video Displays & Projectors board here

I thought about that but then I thought the gamers would have a better idea considering its mainly about games for use.

Up to you though. If you feel its better on the other forum please move it. Thanks.

typically LED is LCD, and just refers to the type of backlighting

bit of misleading marketing if you ask me

Ok after a little more research to me it looks likely that €589 from DID, Powercity or Currys for the Samsung 40" is the best deal for what I'm looking for.

So if it is the most suitable and theres no better suggestions which is the best retailer to go with?? All selling at the same price.

I have a 100hz 6 series Samsung LCD and the refresh rate on it doesnt do much for gaming. These tvs come with alot of motion technology to smooth the picture and reduce blur and noise. The problem is all this tech leads to very slow response times when gaming - a very noticeable lag between moving the controller and seeing things happen onscreen. Most of the Samsungs have a game mode to allow you to turn off this stuff and thats the way to go. Problem is the games dont look as good then.

You need to check reviews of this tv. If Samsung have ironed out this problem for these led's or at least improved the response time alot, then you cant get a better tv for the money imo.

Thanks for that. I really didnt expect getting a new telly to be such a tough choice to be fair but going in to Powercity and Currys yesterday was a bit of a head spinning experience with all the different variables available. And I'd be fairly tech savy as well so had an idea before going in as to what I was after but anyway the Samsung seems to be coming out on top for now. I'll give this thread a little while today to see is there any better suggestions though and then hopefully get a new telly by the weekend or early next week.

You're probably settling on a LCD / LED TV (both the same, really) but I have a full HD 42'' Panasonic plasma TV that's 600hz. (60hz really, more marketing shìte)

For gaming it's butter-smooth and since it's plasma, it has practically immediate response time so you won't suffer from any sort of ghosting affect during gaming. The burn-in effect that's associated with plasmas isn't as bad as it used to be with early models, as long as you don't have an image frozen on it for hours and hours.

Personally, I'd take plasma over LCD / LED any day for the sheer quality and colour of the picture. But, everyone's got different preferences and I see Curry's don't do a size lower than 42'' and that one isn't even full HD.

CCFL LCD or the newer LED LCD, the only real difference is the LED one will use less power. It's the exact same technology with different back lights.
Don't worry about the refresh rate the consoles can not output higher than 60hz and even at that many console games are limited to 30 fps.

I agree plasma is definitely better for games, or anything else where there's fast motion. I've a Panasonic 37" Vieira and it's great; lovely picture and colour even though not full hd. The tradeoff is that plasmas aren't good for displaying text, so you wouldn't use one in place of a vdu for general computer use; but for most people that's a non-issue anyway

    I just picked up this : http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/11833420/art/samsung/ue32es6300-3d-led-smart-t.html

For me its strictly a gaming tv and I cant say anything bad about it. It even has a nice feature called game mode where the frame and input rates go up. I was playing battlefield 3 on it and I swear it looked like it was running 45fps rather than the usual 30. No input lag at all and the refresh rate was incredible.

The sound is stunning to say the least. Its a smart TV with 3d along with 2d to 3d conversion, not that i'll be using that but its still nice to have.
Pixmania I found great to deal with , was shipped withing 4 days and great value.

ok so a quick update. I bought the telly yesterday evening, collecting it today from the Harvey Norman warehouse.

    http://www.harveynorman.ie/lg-37ls570t.html

In the end it was a toss up betweeen this samsung http://www.currys.ie/Product/SAMSUNG-UE37ES5500-Full-HD-37andquot-LED-TV/312969/339.0 but eventually went with the LG as they look pretty much identicle and there was €50 of a difference in the two.
Decide against the 40'' in the end due to the size of the room.

    So what did I pay?

    €799 for:

    The telly
A Dongle to connect to the internet
A Bracket (there were cheaper ones but didnt have the same reach)
    5 year warranty

Telly was on sale in the shop for €630, he couldnt do any better than the web price of €599
The dongle was meant to be €49 got it for €30
The bracket was meant to be €150 got it for €120
5 year warranty was meant to be €79 got it for €50

All in all I think I got a decent price. Probably could have been cheaper and theres absolutely cheaper tellies out there but this seemed to be the way to go.

Someone back me up here, I feel sick after paying out nearly 800quid for a telly!!!

Input lag is what you need to worry about if you want to take your games very seriously. I've spent many an hour listening to gamers moan about it.

To be honest, most gamers don't even notice, unless they play very precisely timed games, like rythm games or fighting games, in which losing a frame or 2 to lag will impact your ability to play.

    http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/sub-1-frame-hdtv-monitor-input-lag-database.145141/

is the best list I have found so far.

When I buy monitors it's the response time I look at. It's how quickly the monitor can update the screen. A response time of 5ms or less is what I look for.
