Partitioning 2TB WD Passport

ok so i bought a new Western Digital My Passport 2TB

I havn't even opened it yet , but i want to partition it to 2 drives say

1 @ 1.5 TB ( For PS3 stuff , videos etc )
1 @ 0.5 TB ( Valuable documents , Pictures of my kids , holidays etc )

what would happen if the bigger drive got corrupted , could i still access my pictures etc , this is so important as i don't want to lose these , as they are pictures of my kids first few days , birthdays etc

i want to have a drive that will be completely seperate should a virus hit the bigger drive , yes i know i could just buy a new drive for the pictures , but id like to have them all on the 1 drive , after all its big enough

whats the alternative ?

If the hard-drive fails (which it will, eventually), you'll lose both partitions. Partitioning will give you some minor extra protection, but it's unlikely to be worth it.

Having "valuable documents" in just one place is crazy. You should at the very least have a local copy on your machine and another copy backed up online (e.g., dropbox, sugarsync etc)

Buy a pack of blank DVD's for a few euros and back-up anything that's irreplacable
