Hi, as many of you may know I’m involved in ADHD groups around North County Dublin.
A problem we have come up with is finding a doctor that will continue prescribing treatment for young people age 18, with medication. Now some GPS do but some dont. Some feel that its a psychiatrists job and some dont. There is no black and white with this, and before anyone starts saying how do I know, did I look into it YES I DID.
We have even offered training to local GP by a child psychiatrist in ADHD but no, some think they cant, but as far as I know, legally they can threat, it is up to them, so anyway...my question, does anyone know of a GP that can prescribe and threat a adult with ADHD, one that has been treated by say the mater CAMHS for years but once they turn 18 they fall into the black hole, of nothing ness.

    Thanks,Cathy

The difficulty here Cathy is the usual drugs for ADHD are licensed to be prescribed only by psychiatrists/paediatricians (on specialist register).
GPs or indeed any other doctors are not supposed to prescribe them and their insurance can be affected if they do (Indemnity companies may decline to cover them if there is a problem).
Sorry thats no help but I will look into it in more detail if you like.

Thanks robf I have found some GPS are happy to prescribe medication once the diagnosis is made by a psychiatric doctor . This is leaving many teens with no after care . Community psychiatric services do t for the bill they say they are not qualified . gP say its not their field either so where can teens go. In Dublin city centre there are services in the mater but some people attend GP so how do we know which GP can and who can't help. Thanks for replying :-)

Looks to me like the paediatrician should write to the psychiatrist and transfer his supervision to his care. The psychiatrist should prescribe the first dose of medication if he feels fit and instruct the gp to continue while the psych reviews periodically.

either there is no continuity of care or no psychiatrist, or the pysch team the medications are not appropriate.
