How to wire a socket

Ok so getting broadband in and want to have the modem upstairs. Turns out I need to wire the telephone socket upstairs, as none of the wires coming into the room were ever actually hooked up to any of the connectors in the socket.

There is a socket downstairs and it has a white wire with blue stripe going into L1, and a blue wire with white stripe going into L2. There are also two other wires, orange with white stripe and white with orange stripe, neither of which are connected to anything in this socket. Modem was tested on this downstairs socket this morning and all is working as it should.

The socket upstairs, however, has 4 wires coming into it - black, white, green and orange. As I said above, none of these wires are actually hooked up to the connectors in the socket.

All the socket boxes are probably old ones as they have the Telecom Eireann logo on them. They have the 6 connectors across the top, 3 on the left and 3 on the right:

    6 2 1 4 5 3
    L1 R L2 L1 R L2

Would appreciate any direction as to what of the 4 wires needs to be connected to which connector in the upstairs socket.

    Thanks.

    Hi redt0m,

As eircom only provide direct support on the broadband / modem when connected to the main socket. The optimum wire we suggest is 5ft. So we can not advise on the set up you would prefer as it could affect the broadband service in terms of connection or speed.

Sorry we could not be of more help.

    Thanks, Mark
