Content and Color Dreamweaver

    This is probably a stupid question, but how do you keep the color of your content areas separate from the background color. I'm developing a site at the moment and I having some trouble getting it to look the way I want. I'm using divs to hold the content but they stay the same color as the background, I'm presuming you have to use css to do it? I'm a bit out of practice with Dreamweaver, I haven't really used it properly since last year. I've been looking over the code from a previous site I did but I cant seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong this time.
