How do you go about choosing the length of a barrell when putting together a 10/22 for t&p gallery shooting, whats reasonable to spend on one?, pros - cons of steel v carbon fibre ?

The best advice I would offer is go to a competition or a club where there are several 10/22's and feel the weight, fire some if possible.

I have probably tried and have owned most or certainly a few :)

Personally I find carbon fibre very light and difficult to keep on target with a bit of wind.

I find long barrels (longer than 16 inches) will make the gun too front heavy, and will wear you out in a 1500 match..

Price - Depends on what you choose to go for :) spend as much as you can :)

    Regards

    DB

I have the carbon fibre VQ barrel, Its a cracker, Very Light, Whether its too light i dont know, its a 12inch with a compensator works out about 13.5 in total I think, Iv also seen a friends kidd 14 inch heavy barrel i find it very heavy,

Best thing is to follow Scalachis advice theres plenty of different varients particularly in clubs like HH not many dealers in the republic carry a stock of barrels so either head to Northern Ireland or ask the other lads on the firing point!

Its a case of different strokes for different folks

If you want to try mine give me a shout you are more than welcome to give it a go!

i would have to agree that in the windy weather the VQ barrels will tend to sway in the wind. but on a calm day their the job esp if ur like me and shoot every .22 gallery comp thats going :p plus they do look the part :D

its a Volquartsen carbon fibre with muzzlw break its 16.5" i got it from http://www.rudefatdog.com/volquartson.html greg is a gent to deal with. id handle one before u buy because they are extremely light and will sway in the wind. then again it depends on the stock ur goinna be useing also. but ive heard good reports about a 14" kidd for balance. its a mid weight barrel combo i just think cw76irl needs to get into lifting a few weights :P

I replaced the 14" + 6" mod (built in) Volquartsen barrel that came with my 10/22 with a 16 1/2" Kidd match barrel. It will shoot 1/3" @50m which is getting to be as good as it gets from a 10/22.
There's a nice bit of weight to the rifle with this length of barrel I think.
