I would think we need to identify a guy in the next year or so.

Haven't been very impressed by anyone coming out of schools lately.

thanks, would be pretty surprising if Sean McCarthy didn't make the academy aswell right?

Also what height would you put either O'Shea or Madigan at?
Madigan is 6'6+. Don't know much about O'Shea.
Would it really? Id rate Madigan and O'Shea as better than McCarthy except McCarthy has had the added publicity that playing in an A school competing in the Senior Cupbrings.
    Stanza2 wrote: »

Very good future. Helped by how his father played top level club rugby in 70s with Bohs and how he is just a monstrous kid.

Think between Youths and Schools there will be a few talented youngsters coming through in the next year or two if this years under 17 youths competition and schools and youths under 18 interpros go and have gone.

Just a sense I got that McCarthy was highly rated down that way.

I think Rock or McCarthy could be possible prospects for the academy but they both have a lot to work on to get there in my opinion. Luckily both are leaving school as under-18's, gives them a lot of time before they are overage for u20's rugby. Which seems to be the cutoff point at Leinster for an academy spot.

Rory Scannell got a Munster academy spot according to James Cronin on twitter. Not really a surprise.

I don't think that any Academy makes "official" announcements.

They do, usually around June. Well at least Munster and Leinster do officially.

I thought that they even wait until the interpro's were completed before deciding on full numbers, particularly Sub Academies?

yeah sub-academy isn't ever announced, but the full academy members usually are announced and added to the website etc.

Vast majority of places decided before Septembers interpros. Players wanted to train over summer full time before colleges back
Sub Academy changes the whole time and numbers vary depending on time of year.

well I presume you're just saying that cos hes on the A team, havent heard anything either way but it would seem like hes going west alright

Parata to Connacht confirmed by his dad on connachtclan.

Had some interesting comments about how fast kids were brought through at Connacht versus Munster, specifying the B&I cup in particular as the next step after the AIL.

he was more or less saying that he's son got 15 min of B&I last week from Connacht, which he would't have got from Munster

His overall point is a valid one though.

Look at the average age of Munster's B&I team versus the average age of Leinster's last week.

There is a little over a year difference in the average ages of both teams. All of the older Munster players have younger players ahead of them in the pecking order too.

Leinster's starting back line was younger in every position apart from 10 where they were the same age.

Age gap of at least 5 years at the same position, Munster had 2 players 5 years younger than their opposite.
Leinster had 5 players 5 years or younger.

    Munster's 2: 25 years old, Munster's 30 years old
Munster's 6: 30 years old, Leinster's: 22 years old and was replaced early in the game by an 18 year old.
    Munster's 7: 26 years old, Leinster's: 20 years old
    Munster's 8: 23 years old, Leinster's 28 years old
    Munster's 9: 27 years old, Leinster's: 20 years old
    Munster's 13: 23 years old, Leinster's: 18 years old
    Munster's 15: 24 years old, Leinster's: 20 years old

Leavy was awesome in the SCT final last year. To see him playing for Leinster A and holding his own only a wet year into the academy is great. Does he play solely at 6?

I would find it hard to find another academy system that has produced as many rugby Internationals as the Irish Academies have per capita.

Edit. I'm just waiting for someone to mention BNZ.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 537 ✭✭✭Bogota

Leinster have some exciting players coming through at the moment : Adam Byrne, Billy Dardis, Gilsenan, Leavy, JVDF

Add those to Luke McGrath and Jordi Murphy and its really hard not to get very excited.

he's capable of playing across the backrow

To be fair we're concentrating the majority of the Irish rugby population into the Leinster academy. So as awesome as it is, we have fantastic playing resources coming in every year as well.

    maybe Adam Byrne at Leinster.

Plays 13 and wing. Only 18 and started the B&I semi final last weekend at 13.

I'd like to see what Start Olding could do at 13.

Great talent but with Jackson at 10 and Marshall at 12 he will find it hard to get game time in them positions so 13 should definitely be looked at alright

Has Mark Roche really been looked over by all these clubs? I know he had some ties with Connacht and Leinster in the past but surely an academy place is on the cards somewhere? I saw him play for Landsdowne firsts against Clontarf and he played a blinder getting mom in the end. Also won an under 21s championship with Landsdowne this year. Surely someone will snap him up?

O'Loughlin's big chance is next season with the 20's.

Marks is still in school, pretty talented kid but failed to make the schools side this year.

Fergal Cleary has impressed at 13 when he played there for the schools side.

Yes considering he's already made an appearance for Leinster A and he's very physically developed. But I think Dardis could be equally as good if not better.

The only reason Adam Byrne hasn't been included in the 20s squad is because he's waiting for a call up from Gatland.
