Trinity have some serious amount of fullbacks - Silvester, Jack Kelly & Hogan

I could see Silvester possibly being pulled into 7's rugby next season, but yeah if all three are playing for them next season that will be a serious back three.

    Biggest questions facing Leinster Academy?

    1. LH Prop, do Leinster offer Jordan Duggan an academy place?
    2. Hooker, is Dan Sheehan worth an academy place?
    3. TH Prop, does Vakh get bumped to a dev contract?
    4. Lock, does Dowling have a future at lock at the province? Could he move to 6?
    5. Lock, how many locks join academy this season? 1? 2? 3?
    6. Backrow, is Ronan Foley worth an academy place?
    7. Backrow, do Leinster offer Scott Penny a place in the academy out of school?
    8. Backrow, what to do with Max Kearney?
    9. Scrumhalf, is either Paddy Patterson or James Kenny worth an academy place?
    10. Outhalf, is Conor Dean worth an academy place?
    11. Wing, should Terry Kennedy be retained by academy?
    12. Centre, do Leinster offer David Hawkshaw a place in the academy out of school?
    13. Centre, is Sean O'Brien worth an academy place?
    14. Wing, should Hugo Keenan be retained by academy?
    15. Fullback, can Leinster rugby get David Lacey to play rugby next season over GAA?

It's being in Ireland for a semester but f*cking off as soon as you get the course you really wanted back home.

I think Harry Byrnes performances and Frawleys emergence as a genuine candidate have drastically hurt Deans chances for an Academy place

    Hasn't overly impressed IMO

too small for pro backrow IMO.

Add in Brian Mollen as well-if hes available from 7s-if he is it will be Sylvester at 15 with Mollen and Hogan on wings and they will play Kelly at 13 as Michael Courtney this years captain is leaving having finished his Master in Engineering.

Had a magnificent game in U20s final-was released by Leinster sub academy-will feature in Trinity first team in UBL next season no doubt as there will be a large number leaving Trinity players leaving having finished their studies

Out of curiosity what sort of height and build would he be? I wouldn’t be too worried about having a short 7

Chris cloete is proof height is something you can work around. He’d probably have to add a few kg on

You make them sound like lego sets. :D

Openside flankers come in all shapes and sizes. There are a fair few under six foot tall that have been very successful: Steffon Armitage, Michael Hooper and George Smith come to mind.

Yeah, you've never really had to be tall to be a 7, it can be an advantage to be shorter when jackaling with a lower centre of gravity. You do need to have the frame to put enough enough weight to be able to survive the clearout and not be run over in defence though.

See the independent article on St Michael (another one!) says Ryan Baird, Dunne, Byrne and Penny are going into the academy next season?

    no surprise on Dunne/Byrne.

Baird/Penny being fast tracked isn't that surprising either.

Interested to see what they do with Cormac Daly and Charlie Ryan.

Could they take 3 or even 4 2nd rows in the same class?

  • Registered Users Posts: 87 ✭✭RugbyRugby2016

Agreed that its not too surprising. Seems like leinster are departing from the policy of making even the most promising of players spend one year in the sub academy.

eh they only had the policy for about two seasons..

long history of players joining straight from school.

does this encourage players from other schools (Terenure, Gonzaga etc) to go to Michaels if they want to go pro? most of the smaller schools (CBC, Andrews, Pres Bray, Castleknock etc) are nowhere near the program going on in Michaels right now and will probably never be.

You might get some but to send a kid to a certain school considering how early you have to apply for these schools just in the hope they not only enjoy rugby but are really good at it would be very wishful thinking, that's even excluding other factors like the schools denomination, family history, travel, etc.

No. The best will be seen wherever they come from. And the 20 month rule(an excellent thing) will stop many from moving schools or from youths rugby going to a small number of schools like Michaels or whoever else

    Not as tall no.

Dunne is 6'7 but closer to 6'8 than 6'6.

While Baird and Daly are 6'6.

The coaching across all the top 6 and league schools is excellent. The gap between top league and big 6 wasn't big (gerrards ran rock close to a 2 point gap which was more than belvo did in the final) gonzaga similar against the other finalist belvo in early round.

All these schools provide excellent coaching s&c as well as video analysis. It helps stand out in a bigger school as you might progress further in cup and get noticed but to make it now you need to be a physical freak.
The spread of schools represented by leinster goes to show if you are good enough you will make it.
    Andrews
    Gonzaga
    Castleknock
    Wesley
    Roscrea
Etc all have players breaking through to pro game

Ranking Academy second rows in terms of potential since Ross Molony:

    1. James Ryan(1996) - 6'8
    2. Ryan Baird(1999) - 6'6
    3. Jack Dunne(1998) - 6'7
    4. Ross Molony(1994) - 6'6
    5. Oisin Dowling(1997) - 6'5
    6. David O'Connor(1995) - 6'4
