Ethan Coughlan is involved this weekend as far as I know.

And just a slight correction, Conor Moloney is actually still under 18 (18.5) he's still 17, turns 18 next month

If he turns 18 in 2020.. then he is u19 for this season when it comes to provincial/national team selection.

Correct , but as he's inside the U18.5 Window and still technically a Youths player there had to be approvals gotten to allow him to play U20's etc.

    Darragh Murray
    Donnacha Byrne
    Hubert Costello
    Oisin McCormack
    Cathal Forde
    Shane Jennings

    Scott Buckley

The ages is easily found by checking recent provincial/national age grade sides and figuring out by that. Connacht havent listed weights on website so you wont likely find out.

All are 2001s apart from Buckley who was born in 2000

with so little rugby being played its very hard to select anyone to join in. Like Cosgrove was less and less impressive as he went through school. To say he justifies an academy spot is based on a sort of Tony Ward hype.
hopefully some version of 20's happens but can't see it.

well they are working away weekly in the sub-academy, so all of them are being evaluated by coaches, leinster A play two games coming up and sub-academy will be involved.

presumably there will be more rugby played in 2021.

Anyone you think won’t be given a pro contract by Leinster? Aaron O’Sullivan and Sylvester look like they might not make it in the backs. Martin Moloney hasn’t played a game yet which is surprising - I know Penny was the standout u20 player but I backed Moloney to overtake him at senior level. Is Charlie Ryan final year as well?

Moloney has been injured non-stop since entering the academy, would be in year 3 next season.

Ryan is Yr 2, I expect him to graduate early along with Liam Turner.

Silvester looks like he is earning one at the moment, O'Sullivan? Who knows.. he is still only 20 and has been focusing on 7's until recently.

Paddy Patterson may not get one.. but who knows what they are doing at 9.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,733 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I think Hawkshaw, Milne and Sylvester get contracts.
Charlie Ryan may get one too, but he's yet to feature.
It would depend on who is released after this season. Money is going to be tight and some lads may move elsewhere.

Toner and Fardy are both likely finished with Leinster and CRyan will move up early.

Clarkson and Milne will go up.

Patterson probably won't unless one of HOS or Osborne leaves.

    Hawkshaw will.

    Turner might go early.

    Silvester probably will.

    O'Sullivan, who knows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,735 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

O'Sullivan's probably got more of a chance to get a 7s contract at this point to be honest.

He is still in school.. seems he has yet to make a decision on what sport he will play once finished school.

Think he is a bigger prospect as an athlete certainly someone leinster would love to have stick with the sport and develop.

Interesting list. Especially profiling such young players.

Reckon Jack Boyle is there as a bit of tokenism or am I being a bit harsh on him?

I have no idea what any of them are like as players

bit harsh.. Boyle is as good as prospect at the same age as James Ryan and Ryan Baird.

might take a bit longer to come through given how young he is still is and how much physical development he has still to do for his position.

Yeah he is u19 this upcoming season, i'd be surprised if he isn't starting loosehead 1st game up, will almost certainly be in 23 though.

be surprised if he didn't play for Leinster A in december too.

    Historically yes.

    In recent years less so.

Especially not with the metric of producing Leinster players. Have been significantly eclipsed by Michaels.

Maybe historically but not necessarily this year or in recent times. Lot more schools and then you have clubs also producing more than they have ever before

Where are the top tier athletes gone in Leinster?

Leinster have not produced a top tier athletic prospect in the outside backs(6'2+) in quite some time, they all seem to fit quite the same profile athletically, looking at the young-ish backs in the leinster squad,

    Hugo Keenan - 6'1
    Jimmy O'Brien - 6'0
    Jordan Larmour - 5'10
    Tommy O'Brien - 6'0
    Michael Silvester - 6'0
    Liam Turner - 5'9
    Niall Comerford - 6'0
    Max O'Reilly - 6'1
    Andrew Smith - 6'0

Some of those stats may be a bit inflated too, that group covers players between 24 and 20. All these players have came through the schools system too.

Looks like this issue has been identified somewhat but it was clear as day against Ulster A that Leinster were lacking top athletes, where have they gone in schools rugby?

whats the definition of a top athlete outside back??

over 6' 2" and can run 100m in under 12 seconds?

the obvious answer is that Adam Byrne hasnt really worked out.
he has all the attributes but been bedevilled by injury.

Barry Daly is another who would fit that bill but injury called a halt to that.

you could argue Conor o brien fits that bill as well as he played a bit of wing / full back in his development and is very athletic at 6' 3" and fast.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,087 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Jordan Larmour is a top class athlete.

COB isn't athetic enough to play wing or fullback at pro level. So doesn't fit what I'm looking for.

Been quite a few years since Byrne and Daly came through system.

Didn't know tall people had to exclusively join the schools...

The two best back prospects in Leinster at the moment, two clubs players, are both over 6'2 (Jamie Osborne and Karl Martin). I don't think there's any dearth of height or natural athleticism in Leinster (mind a declaration of "natural athlete" based on height alone is silly in its own right. Genetic specimen, maybe, but we know well genetic specimens don't automatically make great rugby players).
