I'm going to say neither of those... I found the buckles on those types of carriers VERY fiddley to adjust especially when baby got a bit older.

My daughter is 1 now and weighs 18lbs, so she's small for her age but we're still using the Mei Tai carrier we bought when she was two weeks old and she still loves it just as much as she did then.

babywearingireland.ie ( also on facebook )has all the information you need on safe carriers for your baby. They have a library where you can hire 2 slings for €15 for 2 weeks.

Some carriers are not comfortable for either baby or parent. The carrier should be knee to knee with a good seat ( babies legs and bum should be M shaped ) and not left dangling from their crotch

Some good carriers I have tried : olives and applesauce ( bought this one) Tula, huckepack , kinderpack, connecta, manduca.

Where are you located ? There are regular sling meetings where you can meet other parents and try some slings and have a chat

Sorry for the long post - I bought a 'crotch danglers' before I was made aware that there is better options available, wished I had known and would have saved myself a lot of money.

I'm with January on neither of those. The first looks like it has all the weight hanging from two shoulder straps - which would be a nightmare with a bigger baby.

We got an Ergo from here. It's suitable for use up to 18kg, extremely comfortable for us and for our little guy and we find it very easy to put on and to adjust. We also had the infant insert as we used it from birth, but once your baby has good head control you wouldn't need it. Not cheap, but well worth the investment, we've got a lot of use out of it and we even use it around the house sometimes as our little guy loves it.

It makes sure that the baby is in the right position, and can be used for back and side carrying with bigger babies/children.

Both of us have back problems and we've had no difficulty carrying our 6.5kg kiddo for very long walks, I love it - and so does my husband, great to have one carrier that we can both use.

    Hi

i would not advice on this 2 carrier you choose

    Here few article explaining why

    http://www.storchenwiege.com/babycarrierresearch.htm
    and
    http://www.bobafamily.com/research/strollers-baby-carriers-and-infant-stress/

if you want to read more
    http://www.socosy.biz/links.html

I would not go for the Pond on Ebay for 20£ it is very cheap and there is a reason, i would not consider it safe, and is very light way.

if you want more information about sling and carrier you can look on www.babywearingireland.ie and facebook page
    https://www.facebook.com/babywearingireland?ref=hl

and chat with other mother experience
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/182364631890918/?fref=ts

look around where you are for sling meet, or a consultant who could help you to find the right carrier for you.

the extra investement on a bit more expensive carrier will save you from Pain on your back and on your shoulder, and/or to leave it in the cupboard

if you go for ergo baby carrier carefful on fake ergo as they is a lot on the market so i will avoid any ebay sale

Why would you not consider it safe? I've been using mine for 1 year now and it's still in the same condition as it was when I took it out of the packaging. It's very secure.

the fabric use is very light. not been test for chemiucal safety,
the stiching are not double stich

most consultant dont advise on it. when you compare it with other meitai who been safety check you will see the difference

Agree, I have the Ergo and you can't beat it, but the past few weeks my 10 month old has loved riding in the Tomy freestyle, Frontfacing!!! I'll be banned from sling meets!

Only for short times but he really gets a kick out of it, other than that the Ergo gets more use then the double buggy!

instead of FF could you not put him on you hip or back it is posible with the ergo... ;) so we dont bann you from sling meet /:

I love love love my Ergo!
Even though he's on the big side for it now I'm still comfortable carrying him on my back with it at a big 14 months.
My Christmas present will be another similar style carrier but for bigger bubs I think!

I am a big fan of buckles. The connecta is relatively cheap and easy to use. It doesn't lose much on resale either, so better value than the ones you have posted. Www.coreanne.com are a good price for them, and are quick to deliver.

Another vote for the Ergo. As mentioned before it is expensive but I reckon it's worth every penny. My little one loves it and its very comfortable to wear. Do be careful of fakes, there are a lot out there. Also read the links above, the more I read about the 'crotch danglers' the happier I am with the Ergo

I got mine from an Irish supplier and their service was brilliant. PM me if anyone wants details

I bought an Ergo for this baby but have not got to use it yet. The baba sling is not too expensive and is brilliant I occasionally still use it for my 22 month old if she is sick and just wants mammy.
I also have a samsonite one but I am not big enough to the weight to balance properly with it on but my husband thinks it is great.

Moonbeam, glad you're finding the baba sling good. I got one as well thinking it would be good for just around the house but he HATES it. Hated it from day one, does nothing but scream in it, no matter how I put him in. I keep trying him from time to time but no improvement. Really disappointing.

I used it from birth for both of my girls and it was the best thing ever,it made breast feeding a bit easier and now I use it as a hip carrier for the 22 month old.
I got the Ergo this time for walking and because I needed nothing for this baby and have been after one for ages:)got a good deal on a 2nd hand one.

That was why I got it, hoping that it would be good for breastfeeding and save my arms a bit. L hates having his arms restrained in any way so maybe that's what's wrong, whatever it is I have got zero use out of the baba sling :(

But I guess it could have been worse, we'd really be gutted if he hated the Ergo :)

Stay clear of the argos one. We got it and OH was using it when clasp popped off. Lucky enough oh was holding her at the time. He never really trusted it. She was only approx a month old so would have been fairly light. I binned it straight away and bought a mei tai and never had a problem.

    thanks guys.
Ergo seems too rich for me, both of us will be using the sling/carrier, so would not prefer one that is too girlish :).
Will check the Mei tai ones

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,862 ✭✭✭✭January

There's ton's of mei tai's on ebay with all different designs and they are reversible too so one side is black and the other has the design on it.

What would people reccommend for a bigger buckel sling for after the Ergo?

I was looking here but cant see anything:

After the Ergo? The Ergo is suitable for up to 18kg. I'm not sure if I want to carry a heavier child than that for long, even in a carrier, he better be walking by then :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 699 ✭✭✭lounakin

Definitely not the 2nd one! Looks like ALL the weight is near the crotch area.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,242 ✭✭✭liliq

After the ergo there is the Huckepack, kinderpack, olives and applesauce, Tula... I'm sure there are more.
All of them can be hired from the Babywearing Ireland library (I'm planning on trying out the kinderpack and Tula next!)
The 18kg guide for the ergo would be for shorter heavier babies. My son is no where near 18kg and he is too big for the ergo. It is too short so low down on his back, and too narrow so doesn't give the knee to knee support. Most kids will have outgrown the ergo by 12/15 months I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,242 ✭✭✭liliq

My son is 13/14 kg minimum I reckon and I'm very comfortable carrying him on my back even in the too small ergo. They're designed like proper ruck sacks so the weight is evenly distributed.

Toddler sizes usually lasts till 3/4 depending on size of babs, then the pre-school size is the next one
    koalacubs.ie
    nurtureandbliss.com

Have some carriers that you can have s look at. But see if you can try some before buying.
