I think this is a serious overthink. Does it matter if it's 'user' or 'member'?

I'd love if people could choose their own avatars. Yeah, yeah, subscribing but people (well, me) don't want to pay for something you can do for free on other sites. I love seeing creative avatars, the more the better.

They do contribute to the community by keeping Zaph on his toes though. :P

    Commissioner Gordon?

Surely the Commander of the entire Internet outranks a lowly Commissioner?

Is Commissioner Gordon the same Gordon? If not, next you'll be telling me that Tom Dunne isn't the Tom Dunne.

Those tag lines run a risk of offending someone given the 600,000+ registered accounts. I remember a case of someone getting the default tag of "freak poster" or the like, and wrongly though it was an attack on them. Something such as career in tatters probably wouldn't be well received given current economic woes. If we used dynamic tags they'd end up watered down to be completely PC and innocuous.

How about "big girl's blouse" or "wrapped in cotton wool", maybe "sense of humour in this member not found"
The last one is prob too long.

That's a good idea, maybe exceptionally lame "Theme Packs" for the status. So star trek ones would be Ensign, Lieutenant, Captain, Admiral (cmods), Q (admins), etc.

You choose what theme pack you want to see, and that's the set of taglines which display for you...

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

Theme packs would be a bit of fun (subscribers only maybe). Default range for everyone else?

Was the Star Trek one done before?

    Oh, that would be class.

    One for trades and such.

Novice - Members, Apprentice - Mod, Journeyman - Cmod, Master - Admin

For the Lovers - Courting, Going Steady, Engaged, Married :pac:

There could be lots of decent themes :)

    Hello all,

The Commissioner and I were just having a chat and he said that someone had asked him what a "Registered User" was. Now we all know that it means someone with an account here on the site, but more or less since I started working in the office, we've always used the word member because "user" I think isn't correct. You don't use a community, you belong to one, so being a part of any of the communities on this site makes you a member of them and reminds us all that we're the ones who make it work as a group.

So with that in mind, does anyone think it daft (zing!) of us to propose a change from "Registered User" under everyone's name to "Member"?

Out of curiosity does this mean that you and 'everyone here in the office' no longer absolutely do not think of boards as a community or community of communities and have no idea where that idea came from?

I find it kinda pointless and more than a little cynical to be honest. Just IMO etc.

Your use of a double negative is confusing me, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. But I've had a really bad run in with a head and chest cold this week and I'm not firing on all cylinders, so I'd appreciate it if you could explain why this is "cynical" to me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

It's OK Dav, strobe's post makes absolutely zero sense.

I think maybe he read yours wrong :)

Oh god is it manflu are you feeling okay!? :pac:

The idea of themes sounds good, would it be difficult to implement though?
Sounds like it could be a big job for whoever draws the short straw.

So when do I get to be a Stormtrooper? :D

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

After much analysis of strobe's post, what I think he was asking was this:

"You mean there was a time you when you never even considered the idea that Boards was a community?"

I have, however, changed my mind on this several times and feel this could all be a cunning play on words from strobe to confuse us all while he commits some ingenious crime that requires a diversion.

Change it to state subverter. MacSharry would love that.
