Help!!! I really need my phone today of all days and it has decided not to charge!

Basically, it went dead on me. I then put it on the charger but all it has been showing for the last hour is the 'dead battery' symbol....i.e. a battery with a tiny bit of flashing red and a lightning bolt on the same screen.

From googling, this looks like the image of a dead battery.

I have tried holding the two buttons together (the home screen circular button) and the switch on/off button at the top but they just show me the dead battery screen which stays on the screen for a few seconds before the screen goes black again.

Anyone any ideas??? thanks...
