Neither has paige, she has confided in someone she has ultimate confidence in.

I doubt that confidence is warranted but i guess we will find out.

I don't get all the hostility towards Paige. Her world has been torn apart. This is a massive thing for a teenage girl. She's mature for her age but she's still only 16-17. In some ways you're still a child at that stage and I think this si some of the conflict. She's not quite an adult yet who can process all of this and the child in her needs to rush to somewhere there's stability.

While going to meet her grandmother with Elizabeth was a good thing in the long run to see where she came from, skulking around West Berlin with Elizabeth in full-on spy mode wasn't the best situation for Paige to find herself in. If anything it empahsised what being a spy was really about and I'd be certain that the fact that it looked dangerous has to have occured to Paige. She can't really grasp just how good Philip and Elizabeth are at the craft so the realisation that has to have had occur to her that, not only were they not who they said they were, but also that they could be killed or captured at any time. That's a mind fúck for anyone let alone a young woman to process.

With all that in mind, Pastor Tim seems like a pretty safe bet for a bit of solace. I can't agree with her actions but I can't blame her either. She needed some reassurance and she had nowhere else left to turn. Sometimes you just need to talk through a problem with an uninvolved party to sort out your own thoughts on things. Talking to Philip wouldn't really have helped her that much.

I'm wondering if Paige is in danger now however. She's come as close as anyone has to exposing Elizabeth and Philip. While that can be managed depending on what she told Tim either by convincing him they're illegal immigrants or bumping him off if he knows the truth, the center may have a competely different take on things that PHilip in particular may not agree with. What was the story again with that family that were contacts last season who ended up being killed? Poor Paige is playing a very dangerous game. I don't think she realises just how dangerous yet though.

think the show can play out the whole communist parents horrified at the their daughter getting religion and the pastor being on the take aswell.

Paid for by the money her dad earned. She couldn't have done it without the donation he gave.

Her lack of betrayal was down to self interest, not loyalty. Plus that family has a consonant value system- they are all ITalian Americans, the Jennings have inherintly conflicting value systems and identities under the same roof.

I wonder what Gabriel's cover is.

May not even need much of a cover. There were plenty of Russian emigres and exiles living in the US at the time. A lot were Jewish / intellectual / reformists etc.
Not everybody went to the Gulag, plenty got a one-way ticket out of the motherland. Solzhenitsyn did time in a Gulag but got the road afterwards.

Here's a thought that has just occurred to me.

Paige has noticed all her parents suspicious activity but was not able to put it all together. Let's face it, spy, is not going to be the first thought that comes to mind! Henry does not appear to have noticed anything. Maybe he hasn't or maybe he has and just hasn't spoken out about it or maybe, being a teenage boy with a videogame, bootleg movies and a secret porn stash, he just has better things to do with his time.

But now that he is hanging around with Stan so much, maybe he starts to mention how tough it is growing up with parents who disappear at odd hours and act very suspicious and maybe gives a few examples of times he got up in the night and his parents weren't there. If any of this corresponds with times that Stan knows the illegals were up to something maybe he puts two and two together and figures out who they really are. So while we are all worrying about Paige it turns out that it is Henry who blows the whole thing up.

With that alone, Stan will assume that they're in a sham of a marriage. Probably both having affairs and not telling the kids. It's what he knows.
To tie in dates and times he'd need to concretely suspect one or other in the first place. Tied in with a little more. Something you haven't noticed - like mum and dad listening to coverage of Afghanistan from the BBC World Service. The little twat is a wannabe mimic - some very correct Russian coming out...not just Dosvedanya.
All those combined with Phil asking a question too far and Stan would look their way.

i think that story line, his picture of Stan's wife is that we'll see Philip start having relations with Stan's wife and the kid will notice it if she comes round their neighbourhood, be jealous and tell Stan, might not blow his cover but cause him trouble.

For anyone who might be interested, the podcast 'Watching the Americans' released an new 44 minute interview with Alison Wright (Martha) today. She says that season four is still being written so she doesn't know what is going to happen yet but she can confirm that Martha will be appearing and not just as a dead body.

There's a few hints on the Twitter feeds. Nothing really in terms of plot or characters, they're being tongue in cheek. I'm surprised how quickly they've jumped into writing season 4. I probably shouldn't be as writers don't get much time off.

Finally caught up with the season 3. And wow, what a tense season.

I was convinced Clark was going to blow Marthas head off when he went around for dinner that night. I could just imagine her picking up the phone and then boom...bye bye Martha. But no, she lives to tell another tale!!
And Philip himself, he's aged at least 20 years, he looks to be an emotional wreck, and he's going to be a loose cannon in the next season.
You've got to feel sorry for Paige, growing up in a Cold War environment, anti Russian tension everywhere and then to find out your parents ain't the happy go lucky travel agents they claim to be! Would seriously mess with any teenagers head, no matter how mature they are.

Beeeeeman will find out bits and pieces from the young dunce. He'll overhear things and repeat them and Beeeeman will put it all together.

Absolutely brilliant and compelling television, and annoying as heck that nobody I know watches it, so cheers to everyone on her for discussing! I reckon this will be one that folk will pick up on in a year or two.

Agent Gadd will hopefully be locked up for his brutal and unprovoked attack on Mail Bot.

Any one who is missing this might want to check out Deutschland '83. It even opens up on the exact same moment that the last The American's episode ended,
    Reagan's evil empire speech

I just started watching Deutschland 83. I think I'll start a new thread for it, so as not to clutter up this one.

Margo Martindale has been cast in a recurring role in The Good Wife next year. Probably limits her availability to play Claudia. :(

I'm glad it's coming back but don't want to wait until March. I get a bad The Americans craving the instant the Christmas tree comes down.

Tree comes down, 80s soundtrack and wigs go on. Simple...

Apart from Christmas FM month it's pretty much all 80s playlists, all the time in my house. We even blast out Major Tom in German for extra authenticity. :D

Just started a rewatch of the series. Now that I know these characters so well the pilot is so much more powerful for me than it was first time around. (In fact I was quite disappointed in it back then.) I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the 3 seasons from this vantage point.

If you look at Noah Emmerich's hair in the pilot compared to how it is once the show was picked up...I know pilots and green lit episodes are generally shot months apart, but yeah, the hair. :o

I think the daughter is quite a weak actor and will drag the next season down. She cant handle the complex story line they have thrown at her.

It took me nearly thirty episodes to cop that Philip and Elizabeth shared their names with the British royal couple.
