Hi i am an Irish male,23 years of age and have recently been banned from driving for 4 years for driving under the influence of alcohol.

I have applied for the British Army and I am just waiting on forms to be sent out, my question is do you think this conviction will hinder my chances of getting in?

What kind of checks do they do?

Your replies are much appreciated, Thanks, Tomas.

I reckon you still might be able to join but being banned from driving will mean you will be restricted in what jobs you can do as there are quite a few that require driving.

Best way to find out though would be to contact a recruitment office.

    Thanks Pablo,

I went onto the website and clicked on live chat and i was switched to an agent whom was a sgt and i asked him the question i have asked here and his reply was " no you are not eligible",I then asked him would that mean anyone with a driving conviction cant join the British Army And his answer was "correct".

I might just ring the office in Portadown.

Ya its worth asking them anyway. No harm in a second opinion. They might be able to explain the situation in more detail.

Definitely worth talking to them. I personally know one lad who did a stint with 1 R IRISH and was accepted despite a certain proclivity as a teenager for helping himself to other people's cars!

The significant fact, though, may be that he did stupid things as a teenager, but by the time he went looking at his options for the army he was in his early 20s and a bit more settled.

That is idiotic.Imagine getting through basic only to be told to fuck off.

There looking for soldiers not necessarily drivers.I know plenty of lads who didn't disclose convictions and got in and also lads who did disclose and were told sorry..at the end of the day it will be his decision.im not telling him to do one thing or the other.

Well that's a load of bollocks, security checks from down south and britain are essential, thus providing your convictions.A lot of corps within the infantry require a driving licence also.

Just because you might get away with it doesn't mean it's not dumb.

true, they may not be looking for drivers but they're looking for people with a bit of honesty and integrity - if you start out by lying on your application and getting a place under false pretences how could you be trusted?

Lying on your application is an absolute no-no. HR 101. They will find out from background checks and you will be dropped like a stone. After all, they already have a large manpower pool to chose from in the UK and dropping an Irish guy with a DUI wouldn't cost them a thought.

Sounds like utter bollox. I suppose these lads didn't have security checks done on them either?

One thing: the British Army, and other big armies, routinely train far more of their men to be drivers than the Irish Army, who tend to treat their drivers, even of the most basic vehicles, as specialists. They (big armies) often train their men to drive as a function of advanced infantry training, so a man can enlist and be trained to drive a jeep/light utility vehicle/van with a few months of date of entry.

I know a guy who didn't disclose the very same thing and he got binned during training when it came to light. They will find out one way or another but if it comes from you directly from the start your honesty should stand you in good stead.

As has been pointed out before - and I'll simply reinforce it - making a false declaration, either by inclusion OR omission, in order to join the British Armed Forces, is a criminal offence. With checks on PCR on the HOLMES and Irish equivalents accessible to the EU's security services, in this case, the Army Security Vetting Unit [ASVU], you would have to be terminally stupid to try it on.

You don't have to be a British citizen to 'enjoy' a British jail. But you DO get a uniform to wear, and get shouted at a lot, a bit like the Army.

Funny you should say that. I am momentairly stopped from joining due to too high a debt level. My recruiter told me if he put me forward IT would be found out maybe before or during basic but it would be found out at some stage and id be given the boot fairly quick and he'd get told off too. Not worth lieing on the application. If your not able to get in then your not able Full stop. Better to be honest and upfront than lie about your past.
