Shared gas schemes

I've tried googling but not finding any info on shared gas schemes. I'm hoping to buy a house in an estate with shared gas. Can anyone tell me a bit more about it? How does it compare to own oil or gas tank on price? And how does it all work regarding billing. I know the house has its own meter. Thanks.
