If your staying for a while go off to St Vinnies or The Salvos you can get all you need * as in couch, bed, old TV for next to nothing, if not there should be furnished apartments to rent, but you pay accordingly

    * a second hand mattress is always bit of a gamble, Febreze it first to get the sweaty, dried spunk and old funk smell out first.

You can get furnished apartments they are just less common and more expensive. Could you try looking for a room in an apartment/house? That way you will only need to furnish your own room and could get by with just a mattress -potentially!
