Can you use the nook in Ireland ?

Ok guys need your help! Have bought the nook with the glow light for my son from Santa. I got it in currys. Someone has now told me you can't use in Ireland ? Is this true ? I went for the nook as kindle don't allow you to borrow from the library but am worried now.
