Even 5 years ago (finished below us in our 2016 qualifying group). They actually give me a bit of hope, how their good young players developed together and now play a good solid well balanced brand of football.

the margins are very fine in international football

2 - 3 top quality players can elevate a side easily into the top 20 of the world

If Scotland play Ireland with our best XI and their best XI, they beat us 1-0/2-0 IMO.

We're close to rock bottom at the moment and Scotland are at a major tournament with arguably one of the best left backs in the world and players playing regularly in the PL.

They've a couple of quality players that makes the difference.

I think to be honest there is a massive collection of countries that are all a bit meh. There's not much between the likes of us versus Scotland.

Most countries I would class as average. Some then have may be 1 player who is a step above and can make the difference if they have a good game. But it's all a much of a muchness.

Then you have the better teams who may be have 5 or 6 good players , and these teams will be at a better level. There isn't a great number of these teams, and they will always figure in the latter stages of these tournaments. Teams like England, Belgium, Spain, Germany, France. And then among these, the odd superstar will win the big games.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I mean by them giving me hope… just playing together and growing together has seen them overtake us in the last 5 years. With our young players coming through and only at the start of their on-field relationships, I’d hope we’ll get those marginal gains that see us move up a few % and into the strata of average clubs just on the right side of qualification (for the Euros at least - WC is a long way off).
