    HTC One S is nice...

Nice size too - 4.3" display.

You may not need to spend that much, depending....

Edit: Then I'd recommend the above. It's a bit smaller than the One X which is 4.8" and maybe difficult for a girl to use one handed...it would be second in the HTC range of handsets (behind the One X).

I also like Sense UI - which is an attractive user interface. Excellent camera too. Easier to manage as regards music. Just plug it in and 'drag and drop' files over. No need for computer software.

Samsung galaxy s2 or the newer s3. Both amazing, powerful and fast phones with lovely big dynamic screens

I'm guessing she likes the aesthetics! :)

Simply put, the HTC is a better spec as regards performance in nearly every aspect.

What about the Galaxy S3 in white? Slightly larger than the HTC One S..

It'll cost you about 500e SIM free on the above website..

If I was buying a present for a 17 year old girl, I'd get the One S and if she didn't mind the size of the GS3, I'd go for that first.

The new samsung s3 might be a nice one though a little big, samsung s2 maybe?, the note be a bit big any of the smaller samsung's might suit her but looking for a nice looking one the s3/s2 might be something to look into if something stylish, she can get nice back covers for them and for the iphone or some of the newest HTC's might suit her. Sony are nice too, their designs are nice but not to my taste. I be looking for one that's easy to use and easy to hold, is she a first time smartphone user or has she had one before?

I think the iphone probably suit her more, they are nice simple, easy to use and has itunes on it.

The nokia lumia the newest ones are slim, sleek and easy to use I think and have windows os and there are to be new htc with windows os are to be nice as well they be stylish not sure if they in by o2 yet or the htc ones with the colourful back covers might be nice easy to use and hold.

How about spending no more than €176 for a top of the range Chinese model, serious high spec.
It's a matter of how much value you put in the words Samsung, Apple etc.

I've the previous G2 version of this phone & it's still sweet as a nut.

You're sure it's the Xperia U? It's quite a nice phone, I'm wondering if she liked it because it's compact? A lot of newer smartphones are quite big in comparison to the Xperia U.

The U itself is a nice phone, but storage is relatively low on the phone so that'd be something to consider if she wants to keep loads of music/videos/pictures on the phone.

Do you know what sort of phones her friends have?

It'd be hard to argue against the iphone to be honest. Those android phones offer *far* more bang for the buck and are better looking in my mind but unless she is specifically techy, has an urge for something different or wants the latest and best, the iphone 4 or 4S are likely to be well received.

It's also quite cheap to pick up generic iphone compatible docks/speakers/cases etc.

    Search for i9300 btw.
    http://www.mixeshop.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&inc_subcat=1&search_in_description=1&keyword=i9300

Screen sizes, resolutions, processors, ram, camera quality & internal memory vary widely so learn your specs.
At a min you're looking for at duo-core MK6577 processor.
None of the specs listed on the clones are as good as the Siii.
