    Hey guys,

I currently see these on sale on ebay at buy it now prices.

They are on my "to get" list.

Samuel Beckett (double set) €150 plus €10 pnp
2008 €5 Polar explorer silver coin (only 4000 minted) for €125 plus €10 pnp.

Are either of these worth these asking prices? I am tempted to get the explorer coin, I rarely see them for sale.

    All opinions/info welcome :)

Will you be going to the next coin fair in October? If so I would bring the coins then for replacements so as not to have to pay postage but also to speak to them face to face which will get the message across clearer. I would also print out those photos so that they can see the quality issues much clearer. They will listen to you and they will take it much more seriously if you do it this way rather than sending them emails, because as you saw there, they just gave you an automated type response. I will mention it to them too, because you're right, the Pobjoy mint is clearly not up to producing high enough quality coins and it's up to us to point this out for future releases.

Too expensive, if you have the patience I'll give you a heads up when I see them available again cheaper. I think I know who's selling them at those prices on ebay, if you're going to the coin fair in Oct you should be able to pick them up for less, even from this ebay seller, if it's the same guy I'm thinking. PM me if you're going...

Anyone hazard a guess of the price after the fair?
Going on the Double set Ivan Mestrovic coins is listed at $450/€350 (a bit excessive?)

More interested to see coin + travel expenses vrs retail price after fair

That's anyone's guess and TBH more often than not I've guessed wrongly on similar releases. I'd be about 75% on them selling out at the fair. Even if they do sell out I don't think they're going to shoot up that much in price, maybe 150 Euro? given the amount of individual coins of each that everyone already has. I really don't think we can compare these to the Mestrovic's of which there was only 8,000 singles (was it?) Irish and the same amount which were only available in Croatia and therefore not easily accessible to people here in Ireland. Anyway 350 Euro is excessive for the double set, I would put them between 200 to 250 Euro in value.

Anyone know the current value of the 2008 Antarctic Explorer double coin set (€100 gold coin and the €5 silver coin,1000 issued) ?

    Thanks.

I haven't seen one of these for sale for a while now. When you see them as a 'Buy It Now' sale on eBay or on Adverts, people are usually looking for over 1K for them. If you see them as an eBay auction they actually sell for less than that, they were fetching around 850 a couple of years ago. With the drop in gold price they have come down a bit but they are still valuable due to their rarity. There is a single gold for sale on eBay at the moment for 935 which I think is way overpriced. If I had to guess I would say you should expect to pay around 800 for the double and 750 for the single.

If you are looking for one then the coin fair might be your best bet usually at least one dealer will have one.

This would be the 1st euro triple coin set issued by the CB.
My guess is around 180, i have no doubt that they will be sold out at the fair.

It's a tricky one alright. My brother is in Galway, if he was to go to the fair it would cost him about 30-40 in petrol, 10 in tolls, 6 in parking, 5 admission to the fair, another 10 for a bit of lunch. So that would be 60 or 70 just to go to the fair. Not to mention spending the whole day away from home.

Even if the triple set sells out at the fair and he has to buy it on eBay instead for 200, it would be cheaper than going to Dublin specifically to get it. It is fine for people like me who live about a 20 minute drive from the RDS, but not so good if you are outside Dublin.

Last actual price I seen was €1050 for the Double set, but that was a while back. It will always be a case of supply and demand for prices on this set.

Thanks to DMcL1971 and someone on adverts.ie, I managed to get the €10 special Olympics silver coin and the Samuel Beckett double set added to my collection.
My collection is almost complete with just the Antarctica set missing. :)

Can anyone explain why sometimes I see CB commemorative coins being sold in their capsules but not with their original cases and outers. I see them on ebay or in catawiki auctions. Why would the coin ever become separated from the presentation packaging? I presume selling them in capsules without original
    packaging reduces their value? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

This is a cultural thing. In Ireland we like to keep all the original packaging and certificates, in other countries they are only interested in the coins themselves and don't care about the packaging.

The two main reasons for this are shipping and presentation.

It is a hell of a lot cheaper to post just a coin in a capsule to someone than it is to post a large prsentatin box. So it makes buying and selling a lot easier.

It makes it a lot easier to store and display your collection if you can take every coin that you have, regardless of diameter, and put them all into standard a display systems. You will often see these coins sold in the 50mm square 'Quadrum' capsules. These capsules can hold any diameter coin up to 50mm but are all the exact same dimension for display or storage purposes.

So in many places they actually throw the packaging away when they receive the coin. I have talked to several people who have sold coins to foreign buyers who have been asked to just send the coin, don't bother with the packaging.

It does make sense in that my coin collection consists of dozens of different sized and coloured cardboard boxes sitting on a shelf. When someone wants to look at you collection it just looks like a pile of boxes. If I used the Quadrum system I would be able to display all the coins in a nice, easily accessible and presentable way.

  • Moderators Posts: 6,871 ✭✭✭Spocker

Personally, I like the 'hodge podge' effect of displaying all of the coins in their own individual cases, it lends each coin(s) a sense of individuality - for me, if i were to store in a Quadrum system, everything would just be too uniform

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 Shelmalier

Thanks DMcL1971. It's interesting. Apart from the look and presentation of each coin it must also affect the coins value somewhat? For instance I wouldn't buy a CB coin on ebay, adverts.ie or anywhere else without the complete boxes so any seller is losing me as a customer and my guess is that there are others who feel the same way. Somehow the presentation and packaging are integral to the coin and its provenance but maybe that's just me.

I have been trying to collect all the baby sets for four years now, they are an absolute pain to find. They never sold well. Of the ones that did sell most were used (Written on) and because they were so incredibly flimsy they were easily damaged. I have only ever seen one or two that had not been flattened or crushed in some way. In the last four years I have found that. The 2006 baby sets are relatively easy to get. The 2007 sets rarely come up. I have only seen the 2008 sets for sale once. I have never seen the 2009 sets anywhere.

There were two sellers at the fair yesterday who had 2006 sets but none of the other years.

Yeah the 2006 sets were still on sale with an post at the GPO up to last year. They had the boy 2007 set which I got but it came flattened and ripped in the post. I returned it for a replacement but it was the last they had. I seen the 2006 sets at the fair.

I have only heard about two coins so far. The second coin in the Science and Invention series will be dedicated to Ernest Walton. There will also be a coin commemorating 70 years of peace in Europe.

    I think they are planning a 2€ commemorative - 100 years, 1916 Easter Rising

That is correct but that will be in 2016. They will probably release a proof set that year too.

According to the several sites, there will be once again a common issue of commemorative coins in June 2015. This time it will commemorate the 30 years of the European flag.

Saw that too just now. No pictures of it yet though. I suppose we can expect a 9 coin proof set too.

"The first issue in our collector coin series will be a €15 silver proof coin honouring Ireland’s only winner of a Nobel Prize in Physics, Ernest Walton. This coin will be launched on the 13th January 2015. The second will follow in June with another €15 silver proof coin commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Irish poet, W.B. Yeats. The third and last collector coin issue will be launched in September 2015 and continues our participation in the European Silver Programme marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War."

Interestingly, the three coins listed are all silver coins, there is no mention of any gold coins or double sets.

    Hi all

I am interested in picking up a gold coin from 2012 - so either the Book of Kells one or the Michael Collins one.

I am looking for it for my daughter who was born that year, and I do realise I would have been better to organise it at the time. I have ordered the a gold/silver 2014 one for my other daughter, but sadly these are no longer on sale from the central bank

Can anyone advise (a) how much these coins are currently trading for and (b) where I might easily pick one up?

Any advice could be most appreciated

  • Registered Users Posts: 431 ✭✭gnf_ireland

Note - if anyone has a 2012 gold coin - either Book of Kells or Michael Collins and is willing to sell it for a small mark-up on original cost, do let me know via a PM

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 Shelmalier

You should be able to get Michael Collins gold coin on eBay for around €70-€75.
