    Hey Lads.

I'm looking to buy a good turntable a set of speaker. I'm just wonder what ye recommend?

I think the Pro-ject Essential looks good for my price range but I speakers have such a vast range in quality that I'm hesitant to take a leap of faith.

    Jack.

You may need a certain something in between that turntable and speakers...

    Jack / Enda,

Many thanks for the query (& the answer)..

Yep you will also need an amplifier (unless you have one of course - and if you already have one - what make is it and I'll revert with some decent speakers which we would recommend)

I would also have a look at the Rega RP1 turntable which whilst it's more expensive at £229.95 is really well worth the additional spends..

Keep me posted and thanks again,

I didn't realise the amp would make a huge difference. I was just going to get the cheapest on I could find. :p

I was considering the Rega but I wasn't really sure if there was a big difference between that and the Essential.

How much would a decent amp, speaker with the Rega or Essential cost?

    Jack.

    Hi Jack,

I'm an old timer when it comes to Audio and I firmly believe every link in the chain is important to the final outcome - especially when it comes to audio quality - no real amount of processing can 'repair' a damaged audio signal (unlike video!)

In that regard I would always advise Clients to favour the source and then work towards the speakers - that's specifically why I recommend the Rega - it just plain recovers more info and sounds better than the Project.

If it was me I would have the following:

    Rega RP1 - £229
Cambridge Audio Phono Preamplifier - £69.95
    Cambridge Audio Topaz AM5 Amplifier - £119.95
    Monitor Audio Speakers - £179.95

Total system Price - £598.85 - Boardie price £549.95 including delivery..

Thanks again and keep me posted if yuo have any ideas or if I can assist in any way,

Would I need a preamp to run into the amp or is there some way I could combine? Also, I wouldn't mind losing a small bit of quality on the speakers if they were a bit cheaper. I can upgrade in the future then.

The Rega definitely sound like the better option. Thanks

So,with that in mind, would you be able to recommend another package? Sorry for being awkward.

    Hi Jako,

Unfortunately the Rega doesn't have a phono stage built in so you would need pre phono amp or an amp with one built in.

    Another option for you:

Cambridge Audio AM10 amp (phono amp built in) £169.95:

    Rega RP1 £229.95

    Cambridge Audio S30 speakers £129.95:

For this system your looking at £542.84 delivered.

Let us know what you think.

    Hiya MPK,

the RP1 is currently £229 and delivery is £12.95 so thye total would be £241.95 / €302.99 (let's call it €300) ..unless of course you can find it anywhere cheaper in Ireland in which case we will have no problem pricebeating any cheaper price..

We are running low on stocks of the RP1 - so if you are thinking of one for Chrimbo - I wouldn't hang around!

Thanks again and keep me posted if we can assist,
