Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have had 2 new years in NZ and both in Queenstown both at house parties! Up Queenstown hill, Fireworks over the lake. Was class. I hear the Casino is good craic though.
Great thing about new years there is you simply jump in the lake to cure the hangover!!
This year ill be in Sydney. From what im told, theres little craic in Auckland!!

Auckland is busy on NYE, but its not with normal city dwellers. Full of suburban and west Aucklanders. The bulk of the population go north or south to a beach house from Christmas to after NYE.

The bars are still busy, only a few clubs and restaurants close down during this period.

To be honest, the best spot is by the beach.

Down here in Wellington they don't do the whole NY eve pub thing as much as we did back in Ireland so if you can I'd say tag along with some Kiwis to a beach bach or a house/beach party happening somewhere. Can't remember if much happens in town or if there are fireworks etc. There's a few gigs on NY eve depending where you are that might be good to go to. I think personally I'm just going to hang out with the mates and the misses and keep it low key.

The cities are quiet, holiday spots are busy.

There's normally somewhere with drunk youths overrunning the town which features on the news the next day- Mount Maunganui, Whangamata, Wanaka. Tends to be a different place each year though as the previous year's town ups the police presence.

Yup .. Tahunanui goes in that list too :-)

I did see something on Stuff about a waterfront party in Wellington, for the first time in years. Fireworks and all ....

I've had two New Years in NZ.

The first was in 06/07 and one of my friends heard that Nelson was a great spot to go to as there were beach parties and the like happening so we went down. When we got there there were no official parties anyway and it rained on the night in question so we just went to a pub and nite club. I don't remember it being that busy until after 10 or maybe even later. My main memory was of how cold it was on the way home that night. It was in general pretty hot during the day but that night there was no cloud and I was just wearing a shirt and remember shivering with the cold. All the heat of the day just disappeared and I'd say that was the coldest I was in NZ. All in it just an average night out really.

The second was 10/11 and I was in Rotorua for a wedding. We had a BBQ in the bride to be's house and then went back to the hostel to change at about 9 or 10 to go into an organised event in the park. I, foolishly, took a bit of a nap and then didn't get up again so slept through the night. The others went into the event but said that come 12.30 most of the people had gone home or moved on.

So neither of my nights out would have been amazing nights. In general though the trip to Nelson and the wedding in Rotorua at the start of January were great trips away.
