ESB threatening to cut off a pensioner for something that was THEIR FAULT!

My father lives in a council house and during the summer the council moved him into another house (from number 7 to 8) because they are renovating all the houses in the estate he lives in.

The council also contacted the ESB and set him up a new account (I have no idea how they were allowed to do this, he didn't request it either)

He paid his bill from his pension through the household budget scheme from An Post, €20 was deducted every week. €20x 8 weeks This covered his electricity usage for two months. He used to have to ring up every few weeks for a refund because he overpaid on his bill.

When he moved into the new house in July he had two accounts with the ESB one for number 7 and one for number 8. He got a final bill for number 7 and was charged a disconnection fee. Yet the account remained open and the money deducted from his pension went into this account up until October. He wrote to the household budget scheme in September requesting they change his account number from the old account 900xxxx to the new account 90400xxx.
In October they stopped the money going into the old account but they never set it up

The right thing to do as this was the ESB's fault is to separate this debt from his account. Start the balance at zero, with the household budget scheme restored to his new account he will be able to clear his balance every month instead of new bills coming in and piling more debt on the account .
He has no problem repaying this debt as he did use the electricity but it needs to be removed from the account and paid off on the side through an easy-pay card of some sort as the debt has become too big to clear through the household budget scheme. He also pays his rent through this and any increase in the payment he makes through this will be not allowed by an post as this will be taking more than 25% of his income.

I also want the ESB to investigate how the North Tipperary County Council was allowed to set up an electricity account for him without his consent and all disconnection/connection fees reimbursed to his account.

If you just transferred the account none of these problems would have occurred.

    Hi Chris,

With landlords, letting agents or local authorities, we accept their request to register and de-register tenants as they would be calling on their tenant's behalf and they are the owners (or working on behalf of the owners).

In relation to the specific case you are querying, we would need the details before we could comment. If you are an authorised contact on the account, do send me a private message with the Electric Ireland account number, the name/address in full on it, the contact telephone number on it, and your own name in full.

If you are not an authorised contact on the account, we would only be able to speak with the named account-holder due to data protection restrictions.
