On the way into Athlone beside the Army barracks, Roscommon has traffic lights
Yeah, you're right, where you can turn right into Battery park. I'd bring it up on google maps but I haven't a clue how to.

I'm pretty sure the county boundaries were changes a while back, bringing all of Athlone south of bypass into Westmeath.

See the OSI map here..... http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,603425,741111,5,10

The county boundary is the very light line that leaves the Shannon south of the town at the canal mouth, and goes diagonal across to R246 at Monksland.

I never actually knew that! I know there was a lot if confusion regarding people's addresses like 'Athlone, Co. Roscommon' vs. 'Athlone, Co.Westmeath, especially when registering for things. At least it's clear now!

Theres no trafficlights in Co.Cavan either that i know off...The council just stick in roundabouts beside roundabouts to make a mess of everything.....If the council had it there way....They wouldn't be turned on because of "Cut backs"...

Yeah it was only done for postal reasons. West of the Shannon is Roscommon.

It's not just postal reasons, Westmeath County Council are now responsible for the roads/water/sewerage there as well.

It was nothing to do with post. It was administrative.

    Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898

    County of Roscommon

The existing judicial county of Roscommon less the portions of the towns of Athlone and Ballinasloe situated therein
Part of the judicial county of Galway (Rosmoylan ED)
Part of the judicial county of Mayo (Ballaghaderreen, Edmondstown EDs)

    County of Westmeath

The existing judicial county of Westmeath
Part of the judicial county of Roscommon (the portion of the town of Athlone situated therein)

Yes but if according to the map that black lily put up, Monksland is in Westmeath. Which wouldn't be considered part of the town.

    I agree

The 1898 Act brought in the Western part of the town as it then was into Westmeath. There has been no change in the boundary since. It runs roughly along a line from Golden Island to a point just west of St. Comans Park and back to the Jolly Mariner. The Monkstown Industrial Estate and surrounding area is in Roscommon.

Handiest was to remember it is everything up to Shine's Pub is Baylough is in Westmeath, after that it's Roscommon. So those lights at Talbot Avenue are firmly in Westmeath.
