We have a 2 1/2 year old JRT bitch and whenever we take her to the beach she insists on drinking seawater and invariably throws up in the car.

Up until now it hasn't been a big issue as we also had a 16 y/o JRT (since deceased) and we live a good hour's drive from the nearest beach so we didn't go very often. But now we have a 3 y/o rescue JRT with a 7 month old JRT Corgi X coming to live with is as a long-term foster tomorrow (he has a malfunctioning liver so is unlikely to ever get adopted) and we would like to be able to take the dogs to the beach when the weather gets warm but this is impossible due to Dolly's seawater drinking habit. We always have fresh water with us, we offer it to her but she likes to run through shallow water lapping it as she goes (she also does this with puddles) so we were wondering if anyone has any advice as to how we could break her of this habit and hopefully be all ready for runs along the beach come spring.

Had the same problem with our English Setter last yr - she loves the water but every time she went in she kept drinking it! Only thing we could do to stop her was not let her in the water! any time she went down we just called her back and threw her ball to distract her!

Damn :(. That's what we have been doing but she just hares off into the water. You would think that the throwing up would 'learn her' but so far she persists...

Dogs don't mind throwing up as much as humans do..;)...however, there must be a reason behind drinking sea water...my lot do it, espacially my sheppie, but only a few licks..wonder if maybe a bloodtest would help to see if she's lacking iodine or something..? Just an idea..have a chat with your vet? maybe he/she can help..
