    Hi all,

Something I have been trying to sort out for the last few hours, and I can't. It's doing my head in.

I have thousands of cells of data from the last year. It's basically daily stats.
I'd like to group the daily stats together by month, so I could then create a monthly bar chart for example.

This would make it easier for me to spot trends.

As it stands, each cell is sorted by 01/01/2012, 02/01/2012, and so on.

If I could group the data into Jan, Feb, Mar etc, or even weeks.

I understand I may need to create a pivot table, but I can't seem to get it right. I am clueless. I searched youtube, but can't get it. I'm a total noob.....

    Very simple :)

Say your column A is date and column B is your value. Type "date" in cell A1 and "value" in cell B1

say your data is in rows 2 to 10

Click on the cell where you want your pivot table to appear (say cell E1). Then click on insert in the menu, then pivot table

It asks for a range, select a1 to b10 (it probably automatically select this already). Click ok

Tick both pivot table fields on the right (date and value)

Then right click on any of the dates in your pivot table, click group, select months et voila :D

Which bit of my explanation do you not understand?

It's literally only a few clicks to get from your data to a pivot table with the data grouped by month

My explanation has every step in it...

I meant it's double Dutch to me in a "I'm a thicko" kind of way...

No need to have an attitude

I'm trying to stay calm. It's not easy :D

OP - you wanna attach your spreadsheet then I'll stick in the pivot table sorted by month. Or is attaching a file beyond your capabilities too? :pac:

If you have trouble following Unkel's solution then you should probably spend a bit of time on a basic excel instruction course online. Time well spent particularly if you need excel for important work.
