I wonder would that put the kybosh on Cameron's proposed Battle Angel. I know there's very little similarity but would people who've never read/watched manga/anime just think "Oh, James Cameron's jumping on that Giant-fighting-robot bandwagon.

Have seen a few people claim it looks just like Bays Transformers abominations, but you can actually see whats going on in the fight scenes in Pacific Rim

And who can we trust to save humans more than GlaDOS?

Not sure about Battle Angel, since Cameron can do what he wants. But it may put a dampener on the Eva movie.

Or if it does well, whoever has the movie rights to Evangelion could decide it'd be a good idea to cash in on the popularity

Also, Pacific Rim will probably have a coherent plot.

I can't say I'll be surprised if there's a Japanese pilot named Shinji, though. :pac:

Coherent plot? In anime? Though it would be weird seeing Jax Teller acting like Shinji.
