Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there a way you can view your sent webtexts on the nexus 4? When I was on kitkat they showed up in the swiftsms app but since the new lollipop upgrade they are not displayed anymore.

Anyone else experience the Sleep of Death bug? Last weekend my N4 appeared to power down all by itself. It took an age for it to restart (holding the power button). It happened on both days but I didn't notice because weekend. I had started messing with Tasker around then so I disabled it. It's been fine since but a good few apps have been updated since then.

Other than that and a recent move from 3 to Meteor (oh my god it's full of 3g!) Lolipop has been great for me. The network move has significantly improved my battery life too. As you can see my phone spent most of its time hunting for a signal.

This happened me also last night. about 30% battery left and I was just browsing Boards.ie and the phone shut down without warning. Not using it heavily at all and nothing really running in the background other than the normal stuff. It took about 30 seconds of holding the power button before it would switch on again.
This happened a few times pre Lollipop also.
Overall I find Lollipop to be only average. Some things are great but there are a few niggly issues and I find the design and general feel and usability to be very average.

That has happened me too. Out of nowhere the battery percentage just dropped.

Been getting it on and off since 4.4.3 on 3 different N4 devices. It has been better since moving to L. Have only had it once since upgrade. Though it is a pain when it happens during the night as your alarm wont go off. Have been using safe charge when plugged in at night to stop is sleeping but on one occasion it didnt help.

Lollipop introduced a new security restriction on apps that are allowed to modify write permissions for SMS, so if you do a factory reset SwiftSMS can't give itself the write permission it needs to save your sent SMS's.

There is a workaround if you have a rooted phone using AppOps Root to manually enable write permission for SwiftSMS.

Just seen this post now, thanks. Phone was rooted so I could use the app, thanks again.

My phone has gone to ****e in the last few weeks. I haven't changed anything. If anything, I reckon it has to do with updating to Lollipop. It's fancy but it has been as slow as anything since the update.

I'm nearly at the point of getting a new phone.

Can I do anything to bide me over for a few more months?

    Go back to Kitkat?

Nexus root toolkit should be able to do it for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,793 ✭✭✭Raoul

Maybe just reinstall lollipop using the nexus toolkit.

I bought a screen off ebay and fixed my nexus 4 screen. Cost me 50 euro. The LED light is missing the diffuser glass so I can actually see the light. So if it is trying to make a colour I can see say the red and green light on. Also there is a slight bit of bleed on the top of the screen. Still though for 50 euro it isn't too bad.

I've been getting this too occasionally when I charge overnight.
Like you, it's been a feature since 4.4.3.

I really don't have much time for Lollipop - it's turned my phone into a brick.
The phone app is appalling.I was trying to make calls the other day and, when it would eventually dial the number, there was no sound at all.
Today the screen switched off during a call and I couldn't unlock it or even hang up. FFS

I was running Cyanogenmod 11 (KitKat based) but a nasty bug was causing me to have no in-call audio. I tried to live with the workarounds but it got very annoying so I just took a chance and flashed it with a (technically unstable) CM12 nightly build (Lollipop 5.0.2 based) and my N4 is flying again.

When I installed I wiped the system partition (and the 2 caches) and essentially installed from fresh. I suspect most people with Lollipop issues have them because they upgraded OTA and it essentially installed on top of KitKat.

I recommend a clean install on your N4s. The phone is well capable of running it well.

I installed lollipop using the factory image as the phone is rooted so the upgrade wouldn't work. Cleared cache etc. & I'm still having the same issues I had with kitkat, the phone just switches itself off. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.

My random reboots have gone (phone was rebooting at least once a day on CM11). Is it 5.0.2 that you have installed? Did you wipe the system partition before installing?

Maybe just try the latest nightly from Cyanogenmod (you'll need to grab gapps as well as due to legal reasons CM can't bundle them, but you just flash the gapps in the same way as the ROM itself. In TWRP anyway you select the ROM zip file and then the gapps zip file and then flash and they'll be flashed one after the other). I grabbed gapps for 5.0 from https://s.basketbuild.com/gapps.

For reference I used the nightly from the 31st of January: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=mako

Honestly, my phone is like new. Absolutely flying along...Lollipop is even growing on me. You could try that nightly and if it's still not right then perhaps you have a hardware problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,031 ✭✭✭✭murphaph

CM is better than stock anyway (you can't beat the automatic profile switching (based on wifi network etc.) and iOS like "Do not disturb" features...all built in natively and it looks like stock because it is 99% stock, just with some nifty features added.

These suggestions sound great but I'm afraid I'll screw up.

Is there an idiot proof guide to it?

also can I keep my whatsapp messages?

  • Registered Users Posts: 746 ✭✭✭illdoit2morrow

I've to replace my screen after dropping it.

I've ordered the screen and digitizer on eBay which has yet to arrive.

I've watched a few YouTube videos and I reckon I can manage it but I don't have a heat gun, would a hairdryer suffice to loosen whatever needs to be loosened?

One of the videos uses double sided sticky tape but the screen I ordered doesn't appear to come with that, is it necessary?

Any other things I need to pay attention to while doing it?

    TIA

Just buy the frame aswell. Will save you a lot of hassle! It is pretty easy then. I got mine on ebay for 50 euro. Only problem was that the grey diffuser light was missing for the LEDs but the guy refunded me 60 percent for that.

I can imagine that getting it out of the frame may be hard enough but still doable. The only thing you would need a heat gun for is the battery but yeah a hairdryer will do. Don't be afraid of bending the battery a little, it will bend back.

Cheers for that, I got this on ebay, hopefully this is what you mean.

100% agree on buying the frame as well as screen.
I've had to replace the screen twice on mine.
The second time I only accidentally ordered the screen, not the screen and frame.
It is an absolute b@stard to get the screen out of the frame. I thought I'd go insane doing it and that was even with a very powerful hairdryer to heat it up. There were fragments of glass everywhere.
Still got it done though, despite about an hour of chipping fragments of glass!

I hope I ordered the right thing now, the ebay description was 'LCD Screen Display Touch Digitizer for LG E960 Google Nexus 4 Frame Replacement' but further on down in the page it says 'Replacement black lcd display touch screen digitizer Frame'....it cost approx €60 so i'm hoping its the proper kit.

€60 sounds about right. It used to be double that price but parts are a lot cheaper now.

That is the one I got. Slight bleeding on the screen also, forgot to mention that. But it is still really good and saves you nearly 100 euro.

edit- the price has gone up as I only paid 53 incl shipping and that was about 3 weeks ago. Delivery took ages though.

Started the screen replacement process, it was all going well until i had to take the battery out. There was smoke, a few sparks and a smell of buringing as i was trying to pry the battery off, it looks like the foil seal on the battery is pierced.

Would it be unwise to try and put that battery back?

    I wouldn't advise reusing it!

That is a bit strange, did you disconnect it first before trying to remove? New batterys aren't that expensive on ebay!

Yeah, i was using the thing that resembled a plectrum to pry it out and it pierced the battery, battery was disconnected at the time.

The filter for the led was missing on my one too, I've contacted the seller.

Hopefully the battery is fecked now as it isn't powering on even when i try it just to boot up.

Well as I said I ended up getting 60 percent off my screen. So make sure to complain about it and hopefully you will get a battery cheap enough online.

I contacted them originally to tell them about it and they said they ere sorry and that as a workaround I could use a piece of white paper. I've since got back to them saying that I'm not happy with this.

Battery due to arrive today so hopefully I have a working phone again by the end of the day. I've been terribly productive in work since I haven't had a phone!

That is weird they were very accommodating for me. Not sure how you could use a white piece of paper as you can't access anywhere to put it in.

An apology and £3 refund is what I've been offered.

I've the screen fitted now and its back working normally, I don't want to be without a phone anymore.

I've replied and said I'm not happy with their response and that I know it has happened previously.

Yeah that is a bit ****ty actually. Wonder why they were so generous to me.

The head phone jack on my phone has fecked up. There was no additional double sided tape/the new case wasn't very sticky so it won't stick down and because of that I can only hear music in one ear.

Screen broke :( dropped it earlier hit the bottom left corner got a crack half way up on the right side and the top half of the screen doesn't work.

The last link posted is showing out of stock. The sellers I'm finding are showing UK but delivery could take 3-20 days, UK my hole  any suggestions? Also tried spareslg but it's coming in over €100.

I wish they'd hurry the fúck up! I know they have more devices to maintain than ever now, but since Lollipop first came out they have been very slow with updating the Nexus 4 and some other older devices. Even (cr)Apple manage to get all their devices updated at the same time. If (cr)Apple can update the iPhone 4s, a 2011 phone, alongside their newer devices to iOS 8 at the same time, then why can't Google do the same? Google are really pissing me off lately for a number of reasons, I don't know about you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 591 ✭✭✭Slevster

What pisses me off, is that everytime Google update their app, or play services, my battery takes a hammering.
I have long since come to the conclusion that there is some battery hunger hardware component in my phone related to the radio.
Lollipop just ate my battery . eg 8 hours of very light use
Reverted back to custom kitkat rom , battery ok with full days use (14-16hrs)
Then last week (end of march sometime)battery started only lasting work day. (Turned out Google app had updated) so turned off location and Google now. Battery back to 14-16hrs.
Then Google updated play services. Battery back at approx 8 hrs.
Effectively all the battery drain that I tried to avoid on lollipop, Google has allowed me enjoy on kitkat!
(Have constant "stay awake" with Google play services eating up the battery., dispute turning off any location/stay awake/ request using a custom ROM security feature. Really annoying)

Since updating to lollipop my battery has gone to Sh!t. Even with the help of amplify/xposed.

When I was on KitKat I had battery drain of 1-2% overnight now on lollipop its anywhere from 20-30%.

Looking at BBS msm_hsic_host was on for over 11 hours which kept my phone awake too. Something to do with 3g modem waking then not going back to sleep.

Seriously thinking going back to KitKat. Anyone any ideas other then going back?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭Gran Hermano

Backup data and photos and then a full factory reset?
I upgraded an N4 without any issues on lollipop.
Most problems on lollipop are app rather than OS issues, particularly apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. Do a complete factory reset and slowly add back apps you really need and see how you get on.

That's weird. My battery improved loads with Lollipop. Wasn't lasting a day on Kitkat, does so (mostly) now.

Did the reset Wednesday, only thing that improved was the time it took to charge, dropped from 4+ hours to a bit over 2.

I've all the same wakelocks/alarms limited as in KitKat but drain is way over board here.

I let the battery go down completely yesterday left for a few hours, charged it up in the evening just before I went to bed. It dropped 6%. It was the same thing giving the drain it was awake for an hour and a half.
