    Every new gun is a new application, and new license. Even if you trade the shotgun for a rifle as they are not alike it's still a new application.

    For target work with no previous experience with rifles i would recommend a .22lr.
    • Cheap to buy
    • Cheap to run
    • Easy to license
    • Simple enough to use
    • Can be used in a lot of competitions in multiple ranges
    • Can be used on most every range in the country
    • Good resale value rifles as they appeal to everyone
    • Readily available
    • Good for hunting bunnies, etc out to 100 yards, maybe more with practice.

    What's not to like.

    For makes and models you have;
    • CZ - most popular
    • Savage
    • Marlin
    • Remington
    • Ruger
    To name a few.

    The average cost brand new should not exceed €550. There is always the cost of the range (for target shooting), safe (you must have one for a rifle, but if already got you're sorted), scope, mounts, rings, accessories, etc.

    All in all you are looking at a max of €1,300 for everything. Now if you are nt into joining a target range, and already have a safe, etc the cost drops down to a max of €800 or so. Then look at second hand. You can buy a complete rifle from a private sale or dealer with scope, rings, etc. for around €500 or so.

    There are other calibers such as .17hmr, .22wmr, .22 Hornet, .204, .220 Swift, .223. These are all varmint calibers. They are more expensive to buy and run, but give far more distance in terms of shooting, and are more effectvive.

    Then you have .243, 25-06, 6.5, .270, .308, 30-06, .300WM. These are all fullbore rifles. They are about the same or slightly more expensive than the ones above. However they are pretty much the largest and longest reaching calibers you can buy or need. They are also into a different standard of target shooting such as F-Class, Palma, Match, Benchrest, etc. They are expensive to run with ammo costing upwards of €42 per 20 rounds.

    So you need to ask;
    • What's my budget
    • What distance do i intend to shoot
    • How seriously i intend to get in target shooting
    • What ranges are near to me to accommodate my target shooting
    • Costs per year of this
    • etc.

    That's is in a very condensed, nutshell type of summary however the main points are these. Have a think about some of the points, and see what interests you. Then ask more specific questions based on what type of shooting interests you most.
