    +1

Theyre lovely arent they? Myself and my husband call them "leaners" because they are lean, and because some of them like to lean on you for love ;)

Sorry to dig up an old post, but we have an Irish Terrier Greyhound, and he's hating this cold and wet weather... Can anyone reccomend a decent jacket for him? (That doesn't look ridiculous, and that isn't an arm and a leg/paw)

Brianblaze sounds like an unusual combo.:) I saw dog coats in TKMax in Kerry on Saturday. There were large, purple, decent quality and at €20 were good value. If there is a branch near you have a root in the pet section and see if they have anything suitable.

Otherwise I think the best bet is either visit a greyhound suppliers or go online. Kitsch collars do some nice coats as do Dogs n Dubs. Both are UK based.

I think that the DSCPA now stock some of the Kitsch collars so they may also have some coats. Might be worth giving them a shout before you trek out there though.

The walk for the Greys is on on Saturday and a number of rescue groups should be attending and some may have some merchandise available.

I've bought two of those coats from TK Maxx in Limerick. Actually Josie's only a 26" so I think her one was €18. They are much better than the equivalent greyhound walking out coats you can buy in some pet shops for about €20. If your nearest TK Maxx has them, I highly recommend them! Really strong material, luminescent piping and padded so nice and warm. They have them in royal blue, too.

Are you looking for a coat to wear indoors or out, though?

If you are looking for an indoor coat, I highly recommend The Patterned Hound. Look them up on facebook. They do plain green, navy and camouflage as well as floral! And 20% of the proceeds from each sale goes to a very good greyhound charity.

Edited to add: These are the coats they have in TK Maxx - the brand is "Go: Walk" Go:Walk coat on Amazon

I'm going to go off topic here... but it'll surely be worth it :D
Brianblaze, I think I speak for more than myself when I DEMAND to see a pic of your lurcher! What a lovely cross! Which side does his temperament lean towards?

I'll be there with my gorgeous girl. Look for the white and black stunner manning the base table :D

Anyone thinking about adopting a greyhound or really anybody who is curious about them should come along.

He's definitely more greyhound. Lazy and cuddly, but he does have a few Terrier aspects, digging up the odd time etc. He's also a big socialiser, hates being alone! Gets seperation anxiety, not as much as he used to when we got him, but still a little....

He got his new jacket today apparently in the pet shop in Blackrock. Havenm't seen it but apparently he loves it!

Where is this on? Paddy loves a run around and very few dogs can keep up with him! It's hilarious when he runs with a real greyhound he gets a bit sad because he's not the fastest anymore!

Brianblaze, thats funny that Paddy gets left behind by a greyhound! How high is he?

We were minding a Lurcher recently (disaster story :() - it was so funny to see the lurcher take off at speed, and my other dogs after the first chase, just sort of sat and looked at him - their little minds thinking 'what the hell is that'!!! No fun when you cant at least think you're catching up!!

Ha my dog nala (no greyhound in her blood) is very fast but she doesn't like playing with our greyhounds cos they're faster than her!

Will PM you exact details, am not too sure if we are allowed to put it up here but it's in Dublin on Saturday in case anyone else is interested.

    Could a mod clarify maybe?

He's smaller than a greyhound, by a good 4 inches or so...

if a dog can't catch up to Paddy, he'll happily run around them in circles... There's an old chocolate lab we see in the park sometimes and Paddy will just run around the lab, then get tired, then lie down... He's easily pleased!

Just gorgeous! You're lucky he's more greyhound though, I had an Irish terrier and I can't imagine that temperament combined with the long legs :)

I *think* the Sighthound Strolls post here when there's an event coming up: as it's not a charity or pushing any agenda, I don't think there's a problem with it.

Brianblaze, thanks so much for the pics, he's absolutely lovely!

brianblaze - oh wow he's gooooorgeous!! He looks like an elongated Irish Terrier!! Did someone breed him or is a rescue?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭brianblaze

He's a rescue. Been with us since May now. Daft as a brush but he's great!

There are a few breeds that a certain sector of our community heavily favour to cross with Greys to make a fast, fiery, determined coursing dog. The collie, the wheaten terrier, and increasingly, a bull breed, are possibly the three archetypal crosses, but any cross with a leggy, gamey terrier breed would be pretty desirable. Indeed, it seems to me that there's deliberate back-crossing going on more and more these days to create a coursing dog with grey, bull and terrier in one dog (I know bull breeds are terriers, but in this case I refer to terriers as the traditional under- and overground hunting breeds... Wheatens, Irish, Kerry Blue, Patterdale, Fox etc etc).
So, my guess is that "Paddy" (great name!) was very deliberately bred, but not to appear in any showring ;-)

I met a guy who bred them, and that's who told me what he was. He breeds them for running down rabbits. He didn't seem all that impressed with Paddy, so I'm assumng he was a runt and just abandoned. Or more likely, when he caught the rabbit, he licked it to death...

He was called Paddy by the DSPCA when they found him, because it was just before Paddys day. He had mange and was very very underweight, but they sorted him out. We considered changing his name but he just looks like a Paddy!

hah, the lurcher we were minding used to run circles around our dogs too - maybe all greyhounds/lurchers do this - otherwise its no fun leaving the other dogs miles behind!! It used to drive our young terrier NUTS to have this lurcher running circles around him - terrier would try to 'grab' the lurcher as it flew by!

Looks like theres a bit of a Paddy Fan Club! I know nothing about Irish Terriers - quite rare or not? Lurcher like personalities??

Paddy has a dog friend who comes around to visit our landlady, and she's a lurcher, Black Lab with a greyhound cross, and she bites his back leg to try slow him down or something....

The terrier in him likes to dig and that's the side he gets the seperation anxiety from apparently. Again, not always, but sometimes. Also, he HATES the rain... He got his jacket today so we'll see how he handles winter. He was not impressed yesterday with the weather. I opened the door for him to go outside and he looked at me, looked at the door, and went back to bed.

He's fairly well known around our area now (Blackrock) and we get stopped alot to ask what mix he is!

I have a lovely lurcher girl from a rescue, (photo on my lurcher question thread) when she does something 'bold' like stealing food she races upstairs and runs from room to room madly.....I call her back and she stands at the top of the stairs making a weird barking/grumbling noise that sounds very much like she's complaining and then runs off again!!
After 5/6 mins she goes very quiet and that's when she's fallen asleep on a bed!!
    Adorable!!
